How to Combine Colors in Your Home | Designing Your Home Interior Color Palette

Have you wondered how to choose a colour palette for your home? Are you trying to combine colors, create a cohesive space and you want to know how? Choosing a color palette is difficult because you want your space to work cohesively and not have clashing undertones which is not easy! In this video I got over some basics of color theory including tints, tones and shades of the different colors of the color wheel, I walk you through monochromatic, analogous and complimentary color schemes, and I show you how to create rhythm in your color scheme so it looks cohesive. Plus I go over those undertones so those neutrals are creating a beautiful backdrop for your home interior and working with the rest of your palette.

The tool I used in the video is from Canva and you can find below. There are lots of color wheels out there though I just like this one because it locks in the same tone why you move the curser around and select your color.

In this short video, you have managed to capture every important design aspect for colour choices, and explained it in such a way that anyone should be able to benefit from. Well done. 😊

Can I email you my mood board so you can tell me what I may be doing wrong? I don’t know what I’m doing 100% but I want to make a beautiful living room space.

When my husband and I got an apartment together, I created our bedroom color palette based on a print I knew I wanted to hang in the room (petrol blue and yellow). He thought I was being overly particular about it until friends of ours redid their bedroom and used a throw pillow as the basis for their color palette 😅

  16. Alyssa Taylor on January 17, 2022 at 2:04 pm

So question for you Nick… All those colour examples make me happy but some colours are combined with wood furniture, some black, some silver, copper… etc. How do you match your colours to the correct material for furniture? We love wood… but does it go with anything?

  17. Carol Belt on January 17, 2022 at 2:08 pm

bookmarking this for future reference again and again! i have NEVER understood how to put together a palette, and this helped so much by putting all the aspects together in a succinct way. now i know where to start.

I’d love to see these applied to vintage/traditional, craftsman/provincial homes/spaces.

I am in hell choosing wall paint colors.

I have ‘honey oak’ kitchen cabinets, trim and doors. God help me.

  22. Karen Frank on January 17, 2022 at 2:13 pm

Paint color samples will also be altered by the existing paint colors on the walls, New paint may look totally different once the entire room is painted,

  23. raquel cervantes on January 17, 2022 at 2:14 pm

Once I chose a color palette, do I have to keep the same colors throughout the whole house or is it ok to choose a different color palette for different rooms? I don’t wanna limit my home to the same colors throughout the entire house since I might get bored seeing the same colors over & over again but I’m afraid if I chose different color palettes for every room, it might look random & tacky?

  25. Nicholas Kasperson on January 17, 2022 at 2:15 pm

I just can’t. These definitions are not what my grade school and high-school art texts books defined them as. Frustrating.

For one complimentary is for example a primary and two colors opposite of the primary color but not the secondary directly across but on either side—in the general area. Like orange purple and green (Halloween colors)

Contrasting colors are for example a primary and the secondary color opposite of itself for example red and green. (Christmas colors).

  26. Peggy D on January 17, 2022 at 2:17 pm

Nick, in your apartment it looks like you have teal and gray furnishings. What is your wall color? Where do they fall on the color wheel. They look fabulous together.

  27. Hanne Alliet on January 17, 2022 at 2:18 pm

Okay this video is so insightful! Also, am I the only one wondering where the tile sample is from in te beginning of the video? It’s SO SO pretty

  28. Barbs Dee on January 17, 2022 at 2:20 pm

When I’m choosing a colour I paint the sample pot onto an A3 sheet of white paper and move it around the room, even in the same room there are going to be different light sources and this way I don’t end up with patches of paint on every wall 😂 Love your video and advice 😘

Great teaching video!!! First time I’ve finally comprehended the differences. For me, the visual of the color coding of the words: tint, tone, shade was what gave me the AHA moment. Thanks, Nick.

  34. Marsha Fish on January 17, 2022 at 2:30 pm

Just now watched your clip and am so thankful that I did!! I was literally going to go out and purchase a lounge that would clash with my home. I was thinking it was going to be an exciting POP OF COLOR.😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 NOW, I see it would have been an ugly elephant in the room. Thankyou , and I mean THANKYOU💖💖💖, for your wise and professional advice

Nick, what do you think of the fairly foolproof practice of taking palette cues from the perfect rug or fabric?

  37. sheree naqvi on January 17, 2022 at 2:32 pm

    You’re absolutely amazing!

  38. Johanna And on January 17, 2022 at 2:35 pm

Hi Nick! It’s been a year since this awesome video came out, could you please make a second part about how to incorporate our chosen palette? I am renovating and designing my mcm apartment and want to create rhythm with a complementary yellow/blue palette. Love yellow. Any tips on how not to use too much of the same colors with decorative objects and how to use neutral or other colors in that very same space? A do’s and dont’s video perhaps? /Johanna, Sweden

  39. Qendresa Tike on January 17, 2022 at 2:35 pm

Thank you for making this simple

  40. Michelle Gurrola on January 17, 2022 at 2:38 pm

I really think this information should be an elective class in high school. Maybe my houses wouldn’t have looked like a 7th grader designed them. I’ll be fixing some of my mistakes. Thank you so much for making this video.

OMG! FINALLY!! …only took 60 + yrs for someone to finally explain yin an easy way!!! Whooo hoooo… new paint!!!❤️👍🏻

  42. A Z on January 17, 2022 at 2:41 pm

I love using Canva for not just the colour wheel but also their design tools too ❤️

  43. Kevin on January 17, 2022 at 2:41 pm

Is there a guide to how many colours is too many? and would you count wood furniture and neutral walls/floors as ‘using up’ colours in the palette?

  44. Jeffrey Pircher on January 17, 2022 at 2:43 pm

So if I had white walls and black trim. Does that mean that the decor in the room is going to pop more?

  45. Melita Vuković on January 17, 2022 at 2:44 pm

Dear Nick, you are really No 1 !!! Canva color wheel is soo great advice (between many!) – thank you very much!!! I have one specific question about using the Canva match – if the perfect color would be, for example, H212, and I find drapes in H202, paint in 207, pillows in 198 – would it be still great or just the feeling that something isn’t as well as it should be? (I am using Photoshop to check the numbers of colors). Thank you in advance – you’re the best!

  46. Angela Conniss on January 17, 2022 at 2:45 pm

I am about to buy a 1930s built house in the UK. I have done some research into colour palettes and actually prefer the muted tones of the 1920s. My current sofa is claret and we can’t change that. The kitchen is modern and white high gloss units. I want a cohesive look but using a neutral tone with the decorative elements bringing in the colour which can be changed seasonally. What basic color pallette would you choose?

  47. J Chow on January 17, 2022 at 2:46 pm

  49. Starlight on January 17, 2022 at 2:47 pm

If the sofa is a cool color, should one choose a cool color or warm color for the wall?
