How to Keep Warm While Living in a Van in Winter | Eamon & Bec

Living the van life in Canada has been a dream! We’ve traveled from the east coast of the country all the way to the west and loved every second of it. BUT, once the cold struck we knew we had to make some changes to our converted Sprinter Van to keep warm throughout the winter months.

Here are the time stamped tips and tricks we have learned to keep warm while living in a van in winter:

1:57 Insulation for Sprinter Vans
2:28 Reflectix (Window Covers + Cab Curtain)
3:59 Drink Tea!
4:35 Organizing the Van
5:16 Install an Espar D2 Heater in the Van

As always, we’re all in this together, so please feel free to leave us your questions below! We do our best to get back to each and every one of you.

ACTUALLY, the reflective surface reflects whatever heat you have inside, BACK inside.
Infrared heat permeates throughout most materials and is absorbed by whatever it touches, then gets radiated on the other end when that object gets warm.
Some metals reflect infrared (google it up). Best material surprisingly is a gold foil. That is why you have satellites covered in the stuff, to keep electronics cool (or warm).

You may have already seen it, but Amazon has a USB "gel water bottle" to keep you warm in bed. I saw it on Creativity RV with Robin. Just an FYI. I woke up once with a bottle that leaked from an old gasket. Not a nice feeling to wake up wet in the cold. Love your video’s.

One thing that is always missed in these conversions is that vehicles are designed with the tail lights as air vents. Air flows in through vents under the front windshield into the the ducts through the heater core and dash vents and out through the tail lights. Look at the airflow diagram in the Hayes manual. Many commercial vans have sheets of metal by the lights to keep the area from being blocked by cargo as it’s basically an air vent. Unfortunately, most of these conversions fill the area behind that sheet with insulation thereby sealing the van. This mostly affects the factory heater and AC from working well without being switched to recirc mode but if you have a diesel heater installed like the one shown in the video, it usually vents it’s exhaust outside through the floor of the van, some will have an external intake for the combustion air but most just take inside air in for combustion ducting the inside air out through the exhaust. Problem is most of these conversions have sealed the air vents out the tail lights with insulation. At the very least, you should make sure the dashboard ventilation controls are not set to recirc as that would be a complete seal of the vehicle or have a ceiling vent cracked. Also, I would prefer the heater exhaust being higher such as through the wall, ceiling or through the engine firewall instead of the floor so that it’s less likely to be sealed off by snow drifts.

The most essential part of the heating solution gets literally talked about for 30 seconds while the improperly used reflective window covers and the intro gets 3 minutes -_-

  43. D Walker on May 29, 2021 at 4:53 am

    Thank you

  44. Skill Builder on May 29, 2021 at 4:55 am

Heat will travel to cold not the other way around. The silver reflective surface will bounce the heat from your body back at you so put it indside. The other thing you need is an air space for the radiated (reflected heat) to bounce back, If you place something hard up against the foil it wont do its job so think about that when you place foil in walls.
A layer of foil under the floor with an air bubbles in it is not going to add much height and it will help you hugely.

I REALLY don’t think you can reflect cold.
It’s just that, by covering the windows, the glasses, you simply stop it, but I don’t think cold can be reflected ahah
Anyway… that van looks small…… where is the bathroom?
