If you add Reflectix to the windshield and front side windows, the air gap of the cab will really help insulate a lot. Reflectix is pretty cheap by the roll.

Where did you get the info/how do you know AGM batteries don’t give off gas? Everything I’ve found in just a few minutes searching says that AGM valve regulated batteries give off hydrogen gas even though they are sealed

  13. Drzewacz888 on December 12, 2020 at 11:22 pm

Did you ever heard about sealed lead acid batteries? Cheap and they don’t need maintenance like old lead acid battery

A couple really important things to add to this:
Lithium batteries cannot be used when they are below freezing or it will damage them, whereas AGM don’t get damaged until well into the double digit negative temps
Also, you have to be careful with adding batteries to a pre-existing setup, as mixing different types of batteries can drastically reduce the lifespan of the system.

Hey man, thanks for the video, no nonsense, good info, very useful content. I have a couple of questions. I’ve been given some information from a salesman which I’m curious about. I was told that using an inverter to power an electric kettle or an induction cooktop will certainly shorten the lifespan of the batteries in a system like this (DS AGM, about 200ah worth). He also mentioned that you should not run more than 4 batteries in parallel due to "resistance" , and also that as a general rule, you should have more watts of solar on the roof than Amp hrs in the batteries in the same system (EG 200Ah worth of batteries needs at least 200 watts of solar). Accurate info or nah? I’m not sure if I’m being given the run-around. Also I don’t know if I’m just having bad luck, but the solar/battery/inverter/etc resources and retailers online in Australia seem to be woefully inadequate. Do you have any good reliable go-to recommendations? Cheers!

  21. JamesDaily on December 12, 2020 at 11:33 pm

Holy crap man, I’m looking at Lithium batteries and we’re talking like $1000/100ah… that’s gonna make my power setup like $7500 if I go with Lithium.

I have a suburban camping truck that I have installed 105 AH deep cycle flooded battery in. I’m learning now that it may be a good idea to vent the battery but it is installed inside already. Would you recommend building a sealed box and running a vent tube to the exterior? Thanks!

Thanks for such a great video, you have opened my eyes about AGM bats. I will now research prices. I didn’t know AGM do not gas. That’s a great benefit over lead acid.

I am trying to fix a problem with my battery and inverter…
And the problem may be that I need an isolator or charger like you mentioned in the end. I have an AGM battery. I also thought the voltage sensitive relay is what controlled the power and when it gets power. Am I wrong and should I still get a charger?

  36. Peter Dorn on December 12, 2020 at 11:46 pm

Deep cycle means just that… you do not damage them by discharging them below 50% DOD, what does happen is they wear out quicker. The 50% rule is an economic level that gives you a reasonable cycle life. Imagine only using 50% of the charge in your golf cart and having to walk back from your game on the 13th green. If you leave them discharged, the lead sulphate will become hardened and won’t turn back into lead or lead oxide… this is what people call damaged. It is actually abuse or neglect. AGM batteries do gas, the other name for them is VRLA… valve regulated lead acid and they have special valves to keep a bit of pressure in the battery to make the gasses recombine at the negative plate thus removing the need to top them up with water. They also have a lower charge voltage to reduce the amount of gassing. I was hoping to learn something new, not correct your knowledge.

How fast can you charge your batteries? Do you fast charge or slow charge? Whats the most power from solar panels you use to safely recharge batteries?

  40. Anna G on December 12, 2020 at 11:54 pm

Nice! I didn’t even know fullriver is near my town in California. I’m determined to finish shopping for my battery and solar components this month, it will be helpful to meet dealers and be close to the battery makers for me as I’m new to battery chemistry. Thank you!

  43. playing with sticks on December 12, 2020 at 11:58 pm

295 ah – you could power a small city with that much ! That said it would have been useful to discuss how you determine the amount of power you need. Also have wondered why you seem tp prefer set panels on the roof so when parked you need to be out in the sun hence the van is going to get hot – with portable panels you can park in shade

  44. Angel Martinez on December 12, 2020 at 11:59 pm

When using your house batteries…how do you track how much power youve used? I have 2-12v 100ah agm deep cycle batteries with an isolator. But I’m trying to figure out a way to keep better track of the daily usage.

If i go the combo route, can it sit in the regular battery spot or is there danger of gas leaking into vehicle?

  49. Fly ingDutch on December 13, 2020 at 12:02 am

FFS! Lithium is NOT the most expensive. Stop perpetuating this myth.
The upfront cost is roughly double but that’s for a battery that will last up to five times longer (Spacestation has used only three sets of lithium in decades)
And it’s a battery you can use almost double of (ie down to 10%, not AGM’s 50% of capacity)
Weighs approximately a third of an AGM battery, and takes approx a third of the time to charge.

  50. Karl XZY on December 13, 2020 at 12:03 am

Lithium all the way. Expensive up front, but pays off in the long run.
