Interior Design: How To Mix Traditional And Modern Decor

Interior Design: How To Mix Traditional And Modern Decor

Designer Allison Willson of Sarah Richardson Design discusses how she renovated her home for her young family. See how she preserves the 1906 Edwardian semi’s charm with vintage pieces and modern updates for the perfect mix between old and new.

The home is largely traditional, but playful, contemporary accents liven up the rooms. A statement rug in the living room adds color to the neutral palette, while animal prints offer an unexpected dose of fun in the den. The kitchen features huge brass lights and marble subway tile, and the bathrooms follow suit with a similarly industrial aeshtetic. The most predominent color in the home is soothing grey, and when paired with the plush, comfortable furniture, it creates a space both kids and adults can enjoy.

I love this design aesthetic!!!! Everything about every room looks well thought out and yet it’s quite comfortable and soothing. I’m completely in love with this house and what you did with it.

Where is that red brick rug from ?

  7. Diana Kelley on December 22, 2020 at 11:54 pm

I noticed ALL of her gold accents from kitchen cabinet hardware to lamps and decorative pieces throughout the home. The golden accent trend of today’s home fashion collections was alive and well in this home feature. It sure is a welcomed change from the predominant chromes and nickel finishes inundating the fixtures we otherwise must choose from. Love the golds SO much more.

1:01 "not a typical approach", so a typical approach would be a white carpet? Must be so easy to be an interior designer these days. Just paint everything white!

  9. Darby O'Gill on December 22, 2020 at 11:57 pm

I liked her sitting room, that was beautiful, with the all white and then a patterned red carpet, that was a great touch, only thing is for me, I would have coloured cushions, red and green with intricate patterns, bits of gold and not stark colours, more earthy greens and reds.

Why are her walls always white?

  14. ester lascar on December 23, 2020 at 12:04 am

    Be brave. No beige.

I’m no fan of modern/contemporary decor but this mix was very good. Only downer were the wall tiles/wallpaper in the first toilet – that mess of lines.

I wonder if she used to be a nurse, if magnolia is a cliche then doing everything white is possibly worse. I couldn’t settle in a sitting room in such an antiseptic atmosphere. I think for bathrooms and kitchens, for cleanliness, white is understandable, but to obliterate any warmth, and not having anywhere cosy would feel uncomfortable. I think this is a classic case of fashion over function – which is a fail in my eyes.

Minus the animal fur rugs and use of the grey colour, I like her style of mixing vintage with the modern.

One of the few homes in the channel I LOVE! Traditional style is definitely my jam and there are way to update it for a modern lifestyle while still retaining all the classic features that make it timeless. I especially like that she highlighted the vintage details of the house, although I do wish she had more natural wood tones. That’s probably the only difference I would make, is less painted furniture and more natural stained wood pieces to add more character. The kitchen looks fairly classic too, I love that there’s no impractical vessel sinks!

Pretty but I’m so tired of gray. Please there are other colors that work equally well. Enough. It’s been ten years of gray rooms.

  27. Tiarra B. on December 23, 2020 at 12:26 am

Hmm…it’s like I really love a lot of the pieces and decor items separately, but together…I can see how it can bring about a cozy feel though. And that I love! The kitchen is absolutely amazing!

I love the look of a traditional home. The fireplaces are so dreamy. I would love more color personally. Design wise very nice though it is beautifully laid out. I like this mix of traditional and modern. Very nice 😌💜🌈

What I love is that fire place as the heart of the room with that gorgeous rug! Its just so soothing to the eyes… I can imagine myself grabbing a giant pillow in front of that fire place reading a book sipping tea at night:) for a change there’s no tv over the fire place which I think allows beauty to take over. She really does have great taste for designing 👌♥️😘

  33. Sarah Marti on December 23, 2020 at 12:30 am

Grey is the worlds most boring color. Please stop using it and grow an imagination.
