Interior Design — Stylish Design Ideas For Living & Dining Rooms

Designer Ali Budd shares an open living and dining room with fashion-forward finishes and statement pieces that wow. Get her expert tips on how to mix textures, fabrics and unexpected pieces to create a livable space that’s beautiful and classic with an edge.

For Ali, the key to a standout room is layering elements that don’t always match and pushing the boundaries of design to add interest and unique style. In the living room, she paired two small tables together to act as a coffee table, and mixed woven fabrics with faux leather and velvet-look polyester for a layered look that’s comfortable and easy to clean. A custom black walnut Parsons-style table displays overlapping photographs that the homeowner, a photographer, took himself. In the dining room, mid-century modern chairs dress up the dining table, while a statement light fixture steals the show.

oh wow. I like this. (I can’t help but wonder if the finish on the coffee tables would look better in a matte black though. lol). ..i really love how she married the two spaces yet kept them both unique. I also love the feature wall in the dining room. I know that trend is dying "out." (but ask me if I care). . .overall she did a great job. nicely done.

I love the chandelier in the dining room……

  3. rneustel on January 7, 2022 at 1:35 pm

I love the choices in this room and could see myself using this designer. I also love using different metallic finishes and something different than the same old, same old (the two coffee tables).

Seems very hotel-like in a bit of a boring way I’m afraid. I wish they had hung the photographs in my opinion. I don’t find this is edgy at all.

For one living room and one dining room.

  16. Maya Moukao on January 7, 2022 at 1:47 pm

I agree it is very elegant ,, but,, I would add some color to the dining room maybe the same blue in the living room .. The wallpaper matches the room perfectly

Loving the idea of 2 coffee tables! I’ve been looking for one big one but will have to open my mind to this new idea. It looks lovely and it’s functional. Thanks!

Elegant, classy, classic! The room _and_ the designer. I like the eye for detail, though I do think calling it “edgy” is hyping it up a bit. Without a doubt, that display of framed artwork is my favourite part of the entire room.

  20. Noone X on January 7, 2022 at 1:54 pm

Art display makes quite negative impression – chaos.

  21. Minka Gaston on January 7, 2022 at 1:56 pm

  22. Scott Brown on January 7, 2022 at 1:57 pm

    This is gorgeous and inspired.

  23. Bordeaux Rose on January 7, 2022 at 1:57 pm

Loved everything but the not hanging the pictures. It looks lazy and if I was an artist I would have appreciated a gallery wall and that wall was perfect for that, the area around the lazy pictures look really incomplete.

i’m gonna steal some ideas from here:) love the chairs and light fixture

My living is set up like this in a traditional layout. I am loving for a rug. Can you please tell what size rug did you use in the room?

  28. Alexandra Moorshead on January 7, 2022 at 2:02 pm

A great room to work with and what was done is very nice. Love that it’s practical too. I’m missing how it’s edgy but that term can be subjective.

  29. rneustel on January 7, 2022 at 2:03 pm

Gorgeous dining/living area! I truly adore the mixing of metals, layering of art and the lovely wallpaper. I wish we could see the rest of this home.

  30. ROSLYN JONES on January 7, 2022 at 2:04 pm

Not just one but two coffee tables in the living room huh?! :-), I recently opted-in for the same thing. I say the more the merrier. If you’ve got the space for it way not. Like the living room tasteful & chic. Dinning room is lovely as well.

well done space. Where are the coffee tables from? I so wish they’d link some of the chosen selections.

  41. thefamilymixx on January 7, 2022 at 2:20 pm

this is not my style at all. as I’m super basic rustic/ farmhouse style. with that being said these 2 rooms are stunning. I love love love the mixing of metals, the leaning artwork is my favorite thing to do in my own home. also, the dining chairs are so unique. There’s nothing like a beautiful well designed home. well done! new subscriber here

I just for some reason do not like the way the pictures are stacked on that wall.. They are pretty but I just think it’s overdone.

  43. Fe Me on January 7, 2022 at 2:22 pm

    edgy??? looks basic to me…

  44. TheNicoliyah on January 7, 2022 at 2:25 pm

  45. idaslpdhr on January 7, 2022 at 2:25 pm

Don’t see anything ‘egdy’ in this boring room

  46. Bradhp11 on January 7, 2022 at 2:27 pm

Why would you choose to lay them if there was so much wall space????

  47. ardas on January 7, 2022 at 2:31 pm

    Niesamowite…

  48. brewer921 on January 7, 2022 at 2:31 pm

This is about as edgy as a cheese sandwich.

  49. Ann Hayes on January 7, 2022 at 2:31 pm

I like the space and those photographs from the owner are gorgeous. We couldn’t do that stacking thing here in California. Earthquake!!

  50. sleekmodernchic luxe on January 7, 2022 at 2:32 pm

Love the pillows, if you would be so kind as to let me know where they’re from, I’d be so appreciative.
