Is it legal to sleep in your van in Sydney Australia?

People are always asking me if it is legal to sleep in your van in Sydney Australia. With rent prices starting from around $300 per week for a room in a share house, surely it can’t be legal too buy a van and sleep in it? If that were the case, wouldn’t everyone be living in a van? I can’t speak for others but when I am in Sydney, I love staying in my van and the good news is, provide you are legally parked and not being a nuisance to anyone, you absolutely can sleep in your van.

My van is fully self contained including black water tank and grey water tank so nothing drops on the ground wherever I am parked. When you have a little van with a kitchen at the backdoor , it’s a lot more challenging to keep a low profile but if you do your active stuff in plain view then close up your van and drive off to quiet street where you’re nice and discreet , you won’t have any problems.

The issues arise with international visitors in particular when people ignore posted no camping signs forgetting that they are just the next in a Long Line of visitors to Sydney to ignore that sign.

It’s disrespectful to locals and it gives van Dwellers a bad rap so do the right thing and follow posted signage and you’ll have a fantastic time van camping in Sydney.

Even when you park in legal places, the moaning residents come out and make some BS excuse to try and get you moved along.

I’m from Seattle Washington in the USA, and while there are places one could park their car overnight provided you’re gone by morning the next day. We’ve had people abuse that, and make certain places, some public parks their permanent residence. Why they do that, I don’t know, since thank god I’m not in that situation.
