Living RENT FREE in NYC – The Van Dwellings of New York City #VANLIFE WINTER

In todays video we visit with Rob as he walks us through Van Alley in Brooklyn New York. The high rent prices in New York City have been forcing many to move into self converted DIY camper vans. There are many that come and go as they find alternative living spaces other than their van dwellings. This rent free living can also be difficult as the winter months come.

I’d say the downfall of converting a vehicle to live in is if the mechanics of the motor go bad for what wver reason as miles tend to go up the motor will eventually die… then what?

  4. AngeLInnerGoddess on January 4, 2022 at 1:59 pm

I guess these van dwellers didn’t buy their vans to travel in? Yeah its cheaper than an apartment but if you can afford it get out there and see the Country. Why stay in an alley? Unless you have no choice, then I get it.

If you aren’t Working In the city , what’s the real perc that keeps you there instead of you searching online for cheap $500 an acre land with todays internet capabilities???

Have you ever tried doing a Kermit impression?

  13. tatsf on January 4, 2022 at 2:09 pm

This seems great, and these folks seem like they’d be great neighbors. On that note though, I do have questions. Here in San Francisco we have so many encampments and they aren’t neat and pristine or calm and non-violent like this collective appears to be. How is it established what behaviors are acceptable in the community and what’s not? Also, he mentioned setting up a pop-up shower in the street… is that what they all do to bathe? Do all the vans have toilets (hopefully)? This is an interesting subset of the tiny/RV/5th wheel/trailer movement.

It’s so inspiring to know that there’s are folks with so much courage and imagination. They all sought economic options on surviving the never ending inflating price of living in NYC and opted to live in a Van. And with dignity! Kudos to you all!
It is evident that the economic structure in the United States is falling apart!

  15. Michael Vincent on January 4, 2022 at 2:14 pm

  27. nister e150 on January 4, 2022 at 2:25 pm

Living in a vehicle isnt really rent free the cost of insurance, registration, and gas cost so much more than monthly rent without a car. Wear and tear to a vehicle carries a lot of sticker shock.

While I admire the overall notion of living small and efficiently by using a van as a living space, the reality is that these individuals are simply parking their vans on public property for free, while those who live in the area (owners and renters) have to pay property taxes for that space. They should realistically be getting a parking ticket each day that they can add to their monthly costs to be on a level playing field with those who have to pay property taxes. They are are also taking parking spaces away from people in the area who have limited parking options to begin with. In most places, one has to pay a fee for the spaces they want their van or RV to occupy, which makes sense. But this is NYC. Very little makes sense in that urban hellscape.

  36. Chicago0048 on January 4, 2022 at 2:37 pm

A full shower? how do you get a shower in a van? That’s tight living.

  37. Matthew Moore on January 4, 2022 at 2:40 pm

Sadly it turned mostly in a gear review. So glad for the last 5 minutes. Great title but there are already so many other gear reviews.

  46. Raadny K on January 4, 2022 at 2:48 pm

I used to work in that warehouse with the blue & white walls. Williamsburg for me was a great place economically, you just had to know where to look.

  47. tenpiloto on January 4, 2022 at 2:48 pm

Whu would these guys want to publicize this? Makes no sense to call attention to themselves.

  48. Ado on January 4, 2022 at 2:50 pm

it amazes me that people are willing to live in vans, eat n shit in literally the same room only so they can say they live in nyc… that’s pretty sad

  49. Michael Williams on January 4, 2022 at 2:50 pm

The van life would work really well in the San Francisco area today. It’s really beautiful and quiet and crime is non existent.
