Making It Through College: Students Building Tiny Homes in Vans and Trucks
At City College of San Francisco, a dozen or so students have formed a community, living off the grid in solar-powered camper vans at the edge of campus, building and maintaining their tiny homes together. Faced with some of the highest rent in the world, some say it’s a financial decision to emerge from school with a small savings, rather than saddled with debt.

Would love to find a similar community in Sydney, Australia: student living in their vans. Because it’s ‘vanlife’ with a goal other than "travel’. 🙂
When I got into collage I paid ~28$ monthly for rent, no other fees required, and it was a 3 star Hotel. Well that’s Europe…
Even got payed for good grades, and You can choose a so called "Dual Training", so half of the time You already working at a comapny, and get payed, and get experience.
These are teaching them life skills, so sad that there are not any affordable housing. But I love that they are using initiative and making things work for them
College student here. It’s a shame to actually get safe housing that allows us working class ones to survive to spend an arm and a leg
that’s great address there, lol …..
hello, you want to do a zoom meeting about college students living in vans. Not alone, with other college van dwellers? It’ll be a lot of fun.
If you can handle the heat and humidity Texas is better
The cost of rent is outrageous who in their right mind would pay over 4000/monthly rent save the money and move
Hahaha saw this!!!! This was me!! Homeless while attending a 4 year.. i build up my rig and moved in with my gf.. she took me in and allowed me to pay rent with whatever I could afford.. she was amazing but like any other relationship, things would be rocky at times with her, so in case we broke up, I had a fully built truck that’s comfortable for me to live in in order to finish my B.S.. now that the B.S is done, this is my plan for grad school and avoid heavy debt
Is a great and sad reality.
Problem with america education
College do not provide them like small room or hostel for student
Pay so high but no hostel
Sad america
And guess how much a good Vehicle costs + maintaining it and then the costs of all those renovations and shit then the costs of having power in it and access to…my god think of it all.
update is needed!
Love it! Even adults with children have sold their homes and are building out buses, vans, campers, army trucks, the lists are extensive. So is not just because one can’t afford a house, apartment. Is so much more. Freedom, savings, travels and take your home with you why not ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 I’m definitely building out one this year maybe with a sprinter 🤔
the veterans specifically picked out SF to get the most money (they got $4k+ a month instead of $1.5k a month in other cities), pay no tuition (since the community college is free for residents) and they’re living in a van to pay no rent. They would still choose to live in a van even if housing was $750 a month. They’re saving as much money as they can. Not a bad thing at all. Smart, but something you can only do if you’re single.
Clever & Brave! I hope they get to use skool parking!
I would do the same, save up money and live like this for a while. California housing is ridiculously overrated.
The united states is a morally bankrupt and broken country. This is how you ruin a generation.
✍️
Bro talk about entitled, they have the GI bill with $4,000/month and they wanna live in a truck. There are people that are actually roughing it because they have to.
@3:51 Dude just had to ask that question didn’t he 😂
That’s so cool
FREE education + high rent? Welcome to Sydney Australia, except our education is NOT free. I’ll swap you!! Doing my Masters while living in a TINY van (Mitsubishi express, 2002). Built it while living in it.
Shout-out to the guy in the #MATH beanie.

State government and colleges better help by opening parking lots.
States are collecting enough in different types taxes, they have tons
Of money$$$$$ and no transparency. So why not, if they dont, remember those on election day. Ha ha 😆
The college will soon start charging for vehicles that people live in.
Our vets are homeless???
Imagine going tens of thousands of dollars in debt to study art
I love your van. and the fact that you are happy and content with the simple uncomplicated life.
