Yes, you are right. They are double acting cylinders. Don’t worry about the wobbly dome. It can be pulled off. It covers the hex dome below, which has a groove and split ring that grips the cover. The wobbly chimney is quite a common issue. The base of the chimney is crimped into the smoke box . It’s possible to tighten it but requires stripping the loco down. A blob of superglue should do the trick. You can get spares and improvement parts for it. I suggest that you have a look at Dream Steam’s web site.

Now I’m very jealous. I always wanted one of those when I was young but only managed one of the Mamod stationary engines to add to my Meccano.
I think I was 8 when I got my first one.
Imagine letting an 8-year-old play with fire and pressurized steam these days. You’d get locked up 😊
As for the track issues, couldn’t you make replacement wheels for it so that it would work on the garden railway?

Hi Jennifer Mamods have their own admirers in the garden railway world. I have a Round house Bertie and an Acuccraft Edrig, both are entry level SM32 live steamers. Yes they cost a bit more than a mamod but with no disrespect to them or their admirers the performance difference is worth the money. I started with loose laid track on the patio which was surprisingly OK, but now have a fixed layout in the back yard. I also manually operate my steamers as my railway is all " level ". If you have any gradients though you will need remote control and to get good at using it! Also you can get battery diesel locos for 16mm scale which can be very cheap ( relatively speaking ). The 16mm Organisation is worth joining if live steam narrowgauge in the garden interests you. You can pick up some good second hand stuff through them making it more afordable, plus lots of good ideas and how to.
Nice one Jeny, I used to have a Mamod stationary engine. Found it in a charity shop years ago. I gave it to a mate who was a live steam modeller who did it up and ran it.

I have one of these. I purchased it from Hattons about 1985 as a semi type of kit in black livery. Its still in my collection. I also have a goods wagon in brown and a guards van in grey and some of that metal track. Its not been run for many years. I used to fill the boiler with deionised water to help reduce scale. I used camping type fire lighters to heat the boiler. This is just such a classic locomotive for me.

Hi Jenny brilliant video as always, thought you might appreciate some more info on the Mamod railway system. First of all the paint loss on the top of the boiler happens to just about all Mamod locos, it just seems to be a traite they have, as is the loose funnel and dome cover, the funnels are often loose like this and under the dome cover is what looks like a big nut, which is the actual dome. the silver hook is an uncoupling hook. The tender locos and saddle tank locos you have seen are made by a company called Mss, this is a company that bought the toolings for the old Mamod railway stuff and has started making it under their name, from my experience the Mss stuff isn’t the best quality unfortunately. And lastly all the Mamod locomotives had their own class/running number, so if you look on the back of the cab you will see an oval with SL1 in it, well the green locos were sl1’s, the blue ones were sl2’s and so on, if you google image search for each number you will find the rest of them, I believe it went up to sl6.
Sorry if this is a lot of info to take in, Im a bit of a mamod anarack but i thought you would like some more infomation. 🙂

The chimney is riveted over on side the smokebox so not a problem is lose the boiler is brass so ONLY USE water & washing up liquid to clean

Hi Jenny the brass dome is just a push fit on a hollow bolt /giving you a steam dome above the boiler theis is a spring washer on this to hold the brass dome cover

the check rail on peco points can be adjusted have a look at the side there should be some screw so you can adjust them
Jenny, I owned a Maroon loco and two couches
. At the time I had a small area more of a peanut engonulated shape. Yes the Mamods run quite reliable on O gauge track. I used the American Super O gauge 3 rail track in my shed. The Super O points weren’t a problem with the wheel flanges. I believe I may have ground down the check guard rail so the loco wouldn’t ride up and derail.
Outside I used Code 223 rail. I hand cut my own crossties ( sleepers ) stained them with Dark Walnut stain mixed 50 50 with India ink. Stained the sleepers well and even one palm of my hand. I hand spiked the rail to the sleepers.
My peanut oval of track was 9 feet with 1 passing siding ( not that I needed a passing sodding ). I dremp of 4 trains running round two freight and two passenger , dreams ???
Well I ran the train dozen or so times.
We went off on a 3 day forray an a whilst we were away thieves stole my train and ripped up and smashed the trackwork.
All I have now is find memories of constructing that backyard railway empire, and showing and sharing to friends and neighbours.
I did thourghly enjoy.

My husband as the complete set that you have just reviewed, he passed away end of November. There is extra track straight 2 and 1 curved. Also a brown box shaped carriage all boxed and completed. I am trying to find out how much l could get for these items, of l sold them. In would very appreciate your help. I have taken photos of you would like to see them

I’ve wanted one since I was a kid too, now they come with a gas burner and cost a little more but it would be a wonderful addition to an O gauge layout done with track for electrics and track for steam all sharing the same space.

Jenny I have one of the Mamod loco, anyways the tablets while burning are strong in odour, the loose parts you have there are certainly from been knocked about over the years. These locos lack power tbh my 2nd one is a roundhouse loco a beautiful piece. But your right Mamod do bring you back to our childhood with fond memories

Ha ha. Similar memories for me. I started saving for one from Gill & Sons Hobbies in Sutton Coldfield. I had a Saturday job with them at the time, but even with my massive weekly salary of £5 and my 10% staff discount. I too gave up (earlier than you – I only got to £25 😁) and bought a Wrenn Clun Castle for my 00 layout instead. I did buy one later on as a kit when I started work together with a couple of bare wagon/coach chassis. I’ve never had a lot of success with it’s still in a box in the cellar with a job lot of ancient Hornby 0 gauge tinplate track I found at a flea market.
Did you spot where the lashing springs on the log wagon were sourced? Take a look at the drive band on your steam roller!
Just a thought Jenny, is the bent wire used for decoupling the wagons?
Always loved this set but like you could never afford it, I had the steam roller and one very special Christmas I got the steam car.

Wonderful review Jennifer!. I just got my new (never used, 40 year old, new in box) Mamod SL3 running this weekend. It ran beautifully… I’m now hooked on live steam!

Don’t bother with the solid fuel use liquid Alcohol hand sanitizer much easier to use too.

I would have thought that the ring and hook tool was for uncoupling the stock, rather than a fire-tray extractor. – – Steam oil, just like Hornby live steam, you put a small amount into the boiler for each run. – – From earlier comments, I thought you had bought it!

So nice to be able to hold a childhood memory! I am currently bidding on a Marx 4-6-4 locomotive; it is the same type that I got when I was 5 and played with until I went off to college. After that I have no idea what happened to it.
Should know in about 5 hours if I had the winning bid!
I work at Mamod and build those sort of engines they are great fun and almost realistic to the full scale version’s
