The reason HR got involved was because of the liability.
1. I believe he would be able to claim squatters rights if he had done it for a longer duration and received mail.
2. Had he been injured on the premises after hours that’s another issue.
3. Let’s say he wasn’t as nice a person as this this gentleman’s there was potential for property damage.
4. Clients could sue the company for a security issue regarding an employee on the premises without supervision
