NEW PLAN for National Park Campgrounds

NEW PLAN for National Park Campgrounds

The National Park Service has drafted its “Second Century Campground Strategy” — Jason has read through it and summarizes the changes the NPS is looking to make for RV travelers and tent campers in its parks. Plus, we share a little history on campground development. You can provide public comment on the NPS document here before it’s finalized: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?parkID=415&projectID=97629&documentID=106910

The plan to have power to every site seems short sighted since in the near future most rigs will show up with cheap batteries being topped up by even cheaper solar panels built into each new rig sold. What a waste of money and resources, you folks (not an American) should ask for this section to be reviewed… Also, it’s a Canada Goose no matter where you go. There are too many out of work comics with real jokes out there so maybe stick to making rv videos instead eh?

A trailer park for rich people in motor homes who stay for days at a time, is still…..a trailer park.

  3. Loaves & Fishes on November 28, 2021 at 12:07 pm

I believe those were cranes, not geese.

  4. DeBorah Simpson on November 28, 2021 at 12:10 pm

National parks are federally owned properties and therefore under federal authority, jurisdiction and law enforcement. When the federal government decides to use "their properties" to our demise, then the real reason for their existence will be revealed.

Also pitch that campground should have the tent areas away from the rvs because of generators that run all night thankyou

Thank you for posting this; a lot to contemplate going forward!

  7. Stevens007one on November 28, 2021 at 12:11 pm

if you come in on a motorcycle to camp one night only .. no reservation required.. I have heard there is some provisions like that for bicycles.. I would like to see that for motorcycles also

  8. Eric Zimmermann on November 28, 2021 at 12:13 pm

Just watched this video…those don’t sound like Canadian geese…they sound like Sandhill cranes flying over.

  9. tinnaz1 on November 28, 2021 at 12:16 pm

I don’t want to go camping in what is essentially a parking lot in the hot Florida sun. City folk need to stop bringing their way of "life?" to the rest of us.

  10. Susan Bouchard on November 28, 2021 at 12:17 pm

Enjoying nature. I’d rather camp in a National Park any day then a crowded overpriced noisy campground!

  11. William Knudsen on November 28, 2021 at 12:19 pm

    Sandhill cranes flying overhead.

  12. Bigcats2 on November 28, 2021 at 12:19 pm

"Ya know, in Canada, they call em American Geese." That was funny!! lol! 🤣🤣😂🤣
As for all the complainers commenting below, whining about campground noise, kids on bikes, loud generators, etc. etc. omg!!! You all need to Boondock on BLM land. Far, FARRRRRR away from civilization. 😱😵🤓

  13. Mark Spencer on November 28, 2021 at 12:22 pm

They sound more like a sandhill cranes to me?

  14. Steve's Shed on November 28, 2021 at 12:22 pm

Last time i camped in any national or state campground was 2000.
The sheer number of disrespectful idiots was just too much !
Camping is Not taking your TV, Booming Stereo, 8 dogs , to the woods so you can live exactly like you do at your home in the city !!

  15. Gregory Fisher on November 28, 2021 at 12:23 pm

Those are sand hill crane sounds

  16. Lisa O on November 28, 2021 at 12:25 pm

i think that would be good to allow bigger rvs so people aren’t so limited where they can go and you can charge them a little, not a lot, more to rent sites.

  17. Don Frank on November 28, 2021 at 12:25 pm

I hope they don’t outsource. Outsourcing cost more while getting less.

  18. backpackingonline on November 28, 2021 at 12:25 pm

If they would remove the gravel fill out of the tent site ‘sand box’ the National Parks provide for ‘tent campsites’ I would be willing to pitch my costly modern materials tent for backpacking.

I don’t know what genius thought anyone would pitch a tent on gravel, or the packed hardpan mixed with gravel.

It must be a design for car campers with a popup tent, a ground tarp, and a puncture proof rolled up foam monstrosity sleeping pad?

I have purchased backpacking tents without tent floors, and use a bug bivy inside, for my nearby national park.

    ..horseflys, and all.

They also have horseback trips bring in horseflys: genius, not.

I would rather be able to use my smaller better and more costly backpacking tent in the backcountry?

However, the National Park nearby me has made ‘improved’ tent sites in the backcountry.

They have ruined that 1950’s campground experience.

At least, then, we could pitch our tent on actual local dirt.

I never needed a sleeping pad, then.

Maybe someone will incorporate ideas here for the tent sites?

It sounds like they want RV sites only, now: 45′ sites, turning radius and pull-thru.

If the National Parks are going to accomodate the 45′ RV’s at least integrate the RV sites with the natural environment.

..thick brush and trees can reduce noise of their generators.

RV’s have too many concrete ‘parking lots’ with 50 Amp service, and loud generators.

It would be good, if they could get more of a natural environment experience, even if it means a groomed trail to walk.

The paved trails should be limited to the designated handicapped sites.

If I wanted a paved trail, I would stay at a commercial campground ‘parking lot’.

I do have a Cardinal travel trailer.

When I ‘RV’ I like 50’s style, when we had a Heilite 1-wheel tent trailer and the rich guy had a Cardinal.

If I till had that tent trailer, I would still get out to campgrounds with it.

It was that era of camping that was glorious.

..give us tent campers, tent trailer campers, and small ‘RV’ travel trailers that experience again even if it requires different areas of the campground or different campgrounds.

Two Medicine Campground, Glacier National Park works well.

  19. Corinne Loder on November 28, 2021 at 12:26 pm

If you watch Josh the RV nerd. He said the factories shut down June/July for workers to go on vacation and to revamp factories for the new year campers that will be built.

  20. Mike W. on November 28, 2021 at 12:26 pm

Agreed, no privatization at NPS or commercialization. I go to them for peace and simplicity and I hope we keep them set apart for that purpose.

  21. Richard D. Comeau on November 28, 2021 at 12:29 pm

    Sandhills Cranes flying overhead!

  22. Frieden Hiker on November 28, 2021 at 12:29 pm

    Not geese, Sandhill Cranes.

  23. Flicka Mom on November 28, 2021 at 12:30 pm

I tent camped all my life, but not that im getting old, I really dont want to give up nature. Keeping the rv at a different part of the campground is one solution. Taking electric and plumbing in remote areas is just horrible. Some places offer cabins but those have become rundown and unhealthy. Ill pay more for a siite with hookups inside a park rather than a koa far away. Generators are too noisy!

  24. Tracy Wilson on November 28, 2021 at 12:30 pm

I think updating is a good idea but keep it natural, like he said.

  25. Jim Wolf on November 28, 2021 at 12:31 pm

    Insightful. Thanks.

  26. elktrip2000 on November 28, 2021 at 12:35 pm

Those birds sound weird on here

  27. Phillip M on November 28, 2021 at 12:36 pm

I like that some N.P. campgrounds have night time amplitheaters that Rangers talk about the history of the Park and highlight features of the Park. Fun walking on the trails with a flashlight and find an outdoor presentation theater with benchs.

  28. Cheryl Keene on November 28, 2021 at 12:38 pm

    Not geese.

  29. 1629 Citizen on November 28, 2021 at 12:39 pm

The worst thing they could do is make sites for the huge monstrosities. Keep the campsites for those who camp, for the common people, not the people who can afford $200,000 rigs. Pave a big flat area, far away from any beautiful sights, and stuff the giant rigs on it, so they only disturb each other.

  30. Janice Lantz on November 28, 2021 at 12:39 pm

I love the Federal Campgrounds. We have two large ones over the border in PA and they are super. One doesn’t have any store and the other has a small store that carries fishing bait also.

  33. Tuvia A on November 28, 2021 at 12:43 pm

I’ve been to many National Park campgrounds spanning multiple decades and one thing stands out. The rubbish and some people’s lack of education about cleaning up after themselves. This goes for tent / hammock campers to big rigs. I clean up after myself and a lot of times for the person who camped in the site before me. There needs to be a bigger education push for all people who camp. If you can’t clean up after yourself, stay home.

  34. Danny Boy on November 28, 2021 at 12:43 pm

Every time I hear "more inclusive" all I hear is woke marxists are involved and blatant anti-white racism is about to be instituted.

  35. Jennifer Rush on November 28, 2021 at 12:45 pm

I agree! Make it accessible but we come to experience nature. If you want all the things go to just a regular campground.

  36. George H. Reed Jr. on November 28, 2021 at 12:48 pm

Unfortunately mostNPs are run by a third party! And a lot of them are nothing more than a parking lot with larger parking spaces! Like Big Bent in Texas ,!

  37. Joyce Paris on November 28, 2021 at 12:48 pm

I don’t want bigger and bigger and more and more “ Glamping homes on wheels” blocking my view while I’m camping in my campervan !!

  38. Lauren Keon on November 28, 2021 at 12:49 pm

Retiring soon and National Parks IS the way I wanna do it. Forget TT. I want to b surrounded by trees and nature, not swarms of people. People are good. Nature is just better

  39. Timothy Paynter on November 28, 2021 at 12:49 pm

Yes we want internet access! They can enhance the experience with special applications. Concessionaires are worthless. More locations need to be built with greater distancing with sites.

  40. Sandra Stewart on November 28, 2021 at 12:51 pm

One of the advantages of a teardrop trailer, they fit… Geese, flying cows

  41. Scott in MN on November 28, 2021 at 12:57 pm

    I despise the big rvs.

  42. B H on November 28, 2021 at 12:57 pm

Every park must have a place to dump sewage within the park, maybe near the entrance. Just so folks don’t have to leave or drive somewhere else away from there site.

  43. Keith Messinger on November 28, 2021 at 12:58 pm

    Ban generators.

  44. John Galt on November 28, 2021 at 12:58 pm

Autonomous vehicles will predominate quickly in about 5 years. Utilities will be provided on 4 wheels, and there need not be permanent sites. Not only will more people be visiting beautiful places, they’ll be living in them, too. The abundance of beautiful places might become the USA’s biggest asset internationally.

  45. Alan Krumm on November 28, 2021 at 12:59 pm

National campgrounds and state campgrounds for RVs used to be a very reasonably priced where the average Joe could afford to go now it’s extremely expensive it’s outrageous what they charge the whole idea of national and state parks is so that everyone can enjoy them and that’s just not the case it is a money making machine the park system both state and nationally nothing but about money money money and blocking anyway anywhere to Camp other than in those campgrounds that you have to pay money money money it’s a national tragedy and shame

  46. Truly Blessed on November 28, 2021 at 1:00 pm

OH! I’m so very happy our natural spaces will remain as natural as possible. When I go to a National Park CG, I’m going there because I DON’T WANT all the commercialization that private CGs provide. When I go to a private CG, I’m going there cuz I want what they have to offer. The variety is nice and I’d hate to see our National Parks go the way of privatization. HOORAH!!

  47. Patti Stennett on November 28, 2021 at 1:00 pm

    Not Canada geese. Sandhill cranes!

  48. Steve's Shed on November 28, 2021 at 1:01 pm

Not worried about space, if there are less extravagant rigs at the parks, I’m all for it.
Camping lately has been like a contest to see who has the most outrageous setup.
I’ll take the minimalist route thank you very much.

  49. Eric Reid on November 28, 2021 at 1:02 pm

I can tell you one thing all the National Parks need is a designated RV parking lot I can’t tell you how many RVs and trailers block traffic when trying to find a parking spot at the Grand Canyon it’s annoying

  50. Old Salt on November 28, 2021 at 1:03 pm

Leave them alone but keep the general maintenance up.
