This is a good example of not having a clue but having a go anyway. In this case it’s a shame because this floor will be plagued with issues, 1 3/4" brads without glue, you couldn’t have screamed louder for squeaks but what’s really going to comeback and bite you on the ass is butt joints where you MUST have tongue & groove. Good effort nonetheless!

  2. Carla Mahlberg on June 29, 2021 at 2:26 am

Can you do this if you have a concrete slab? Would you have to use glue?

  3. John Goin on June 29, 2021 at 2:26 am

I would love to know how long did it take for moisture to get into this floor and the plywood start to separate and hump up .. Im sure not very long. It looked good when he was finished dont get me wrong. Id bet a couple months down the road it did not.

  4. Viking Nomad on June 29, 2021 at 2:27 am

Groove the boards all the way around, and put in a loose tenon. Nail in the groove, before putting in the loose tenon. But nothing wrong with making floorboards of plywood. In my country the plywood is more expensive than 1 inch real wood floorboards per square meter, so I wouldn’t bother.

This is horrendous. Anyone watching this please never do this

  6. annette pope on June 29, 2021 at 2:29 am

Looks great. Wish I could do a lot with plywood but in australia, plywood is 3x or more what you paid for it

I always take renovation advice from someone who works in their socks.

It’s been 5 years since the video was published. How has the floor held up?

  13. Ryan Navarre on June 29, 2021 at 2:38 am

Has anyone tried to stain and polyurethane before installing? Then touch up and final coat after?

  14. Mike O on June 29, 2021 at 2:39 am

Nice looking subfloor! Can’t wait for part 2 when you put the floor in

  15. Moxon on June 29, 2021 at 2:39 am

be careful with kids, pine splinters easily.

  16. rob Gookin on June 29, 2021 at 2:41 am

If you do enough floors like this maybe you could save enough money to buy shoes

  17. TJ Anderson on June 29, 2021 at 2:46 am

Would love a follow-up on how they have held up!

  18. Kiko Valladolid on June 29, 2021 at 2:47 am

What do I do if I have concrete floor? How would I secure the plywood down?

  19. Deborah Wesner on June 29, 2021 at 2:49 am

You are so organized and explain very well. I can do this! Thank you🙏🏽

  20. Joseph Ruiz on June 29, 2021 at 2:49 am

Please don’t do this to your floors. No tongue and groove so floor will become wavy. An 18 gauge nail to hold it down is comical. Very creative but basically just laid down sub floor for when he has to install flooring over it

  21. Enfe on June 29, 2021 at 2:53 am

$100 in wood. $4000 in nails haha. Just kidding awesome job.

Hey fellow Michigan michigander here. How did the flooring hold up? Being 5yrs later now..

  30. psrandz on June 29, 2021 at 3:01 am

Wtf is with the pic you chose in the end

  31. Steevo on June 29, 2021 at 3:04 am

I like the clever idea to save money, but I would never do it in a house I expected to resell unless the typical clientele were hillbillys. And top nailing 3/4" flooring with 18 ga. brads is crazy. That wood won’t stick around long before it pops up and/or squeaks.
If your subfloor is sound why not go with 1/2" plywood? The plies are all the same thickness, and you don’t need and solid 1-1/2" floor. And use adhesive AND at least 15 ga. nails. But why am I even giving advice on doing something only amateurs and poor people do? Well, maybe you have a cabin you want to spruce up. Please don’t do this to your house if it has any resale value.

  32. Leo Estacio on June 29, 2021 at 3:05 am

    No mmm N

  33. J. Metcalf on June 29, 2021 at 3:06 am

There is a reason pine isn’t used for flooring..you will learn why

  34. Max on June 29, 2021 at 3:06 am

Problem with the roofing paper is it burns fast and hot. Not good for indoor applications!

  35. Arvin Bahri on June 29, 2021 at 3:06 am

bring this up one notch by running the edges through a tongue and groove router and brad nailing on an angle through the tongues rather than straight down. no nail holes, and better hold. brad nails also you want some thicker ones for better adhesion to the ground, those will eventually come up with some use. 🙂

  36. TheJsaffle on June 29, 2021 at 3:09 am

I would of at least edges glued the boards together, wondering how this actually stayed down over the years to come

  37. BRALEYS Hardwood Customs on June 29, 2021 at 3:09 am

Got the same results ,never ripped one piece and never said a word ..

  38. Ann333 on June 29, 2021 at 3:10 am

Thank you so much for lowering the sound of the saw…. omg thank you.

  39. Philippines US on June 29, 2021 at 3:10 am

No no no. This is soft wood not hard wood. Will not last. You spent 1.06 a square foot to save 30% for a floor that will not last.

  40. tecnolover2642 on June 29, 2021 at 3:11 am

Won’t the nails work themselves out rather quickly making it a nightmare to walk on? Id really want to go deeper just to make sure they don’t come up soon

  41. Ryan Jaynes on June 29, 2021 at 3:11 am

So with 3/4" ply, 1/8" felt and 1-1/4" brad nails into osb that leaves you with a truly anemic grab.. 4 years later there is no way you didnt have issues with those boards moving. Not sure of the availability where you are but #3 or utility, tongue and groove oak is only about $1 a sqft. Your option may sound cheaper on the front end but sounds like a slight disaster in the long run.

  42. A M on June 29, 2021 at 3:12 am

But where is the finished product?

  43. PNW Sportbike Life on June 29, 2021 at 3:14 am

Nice job! Much easier when you don’t have to worry about all the pesky joints haha

  44. Tony Evey on June 29, 2021 at 3:14 am

    Nice steel toe socks🤣

  45. microbusinessmedia on June 29, 2021 at 3:15 am

    Great instructions!

  46. Hi Honey on June 29, 2021 at 3:16 am

I did this Birch plywood on a floor and did tonge and groove with a router and installed like a puzzle without cutting but a couple of edges. and sealed boards. Its been over 8 years and floor still looks beautiful. I’m thinking to redo my floors with Birchwood as well.

  47. fabio40 on June 29, 2021 at 3:17 am

Are you nuts? Using a pneumatic nailer in stocking feet! You came awfully close to putting a nail through your foot a couple of times.

  48. Sandy Muddy on June 29, 2021 at 3:18 am

Where’s your shoes⁉️ my gawd you’re not real bright 😎 why didn’t you stain the wood first & use the colored nails or even pegs🙄

  49. Jaro Ciro on June 29, 2021 at 3:18 am

All that work now it’s ready for carpet.

  50. To the moon on June 29, 2021 at 3:18 am

I have a legitimate question: Why does nobody ever do a precoat of stain or varnish before laying the flooring?
