Pro tip. Park near other vehicles. Don’t park in the back of the lot.

I have a 1978 Chevy G20 Beauville (window van) but the windows are painted black inside with 3" of insulation and paneled over, so it looks like really dark tint. My solar panels have black frames and are practically invisible tucked in the factory luggage rack. Roof vents are expected on a van of this vintage and draw no attention. And the final piece, handicap plates. It just looks like a cool old wheelchair van. I always park on the street, usually in a neighborhood that’s a mix of residential and commercial buildings or an urban church. Also sometimes at a
busy auto repair shop with several vehicles waiting for service. No one ever notices a extra vehicle in these places. I’ve never had a knock and have been doing it like this for 18 months now.

I just found your channel. This is the most comprehensive stealth camping video on YouTube. I enjoyed the dive clips and appreciate your passion. Subscribed.

As far as some people peeing in the sink and letting it drain outside, I find that to be irresponsible. The community needs to dispose of urine properly. Just use pee bottles and empty in a toilet daily.

In many states, having business signage requires commercial plates, which requires commercial vehicle insurance.
    Great video. Thanks.

Its a shame that anyone needs to "stealth" camp while riots are an every day occurrence across most major USA cities. As long as you do no harm or make anyone uncomfortable, what’s the problem? Homeless people sleep on NY subways every single day. I pass no less than 2 street corner folks that "will work for food" twice per day. Who cares? Maybe help them out, but I do not feel threatened one bit. This is God’s Earth. Not mine or anyone else’s.

I would like to know if you have to ground your solar system to the body of the van. This would use the same ground as your car battery. OR did you actually keep the solar system ground independent/not connected to your car battery ground? hope this made sense.  Thank you

Just made friends with a van dweller. He works 3 to 11 shift. Stops at waffle house after work, has gotten to know the night shift people well enough he sleeps in their lots sometimes. He mentioned planet fitness as his favorite. He has some pretty good stories as he works a few months here, moves on and a few months there.

I would get a two magnetic signs one for each side of the van for a plumbing or sewer cleaning company. Then have brackets made to hold round pipes on both sides of the van and also across the front and rear of the roof. Use large sized pipes like six inch or so (even if they are aluminum pipes painted white) and make sure that the brackets hold the pipes close to the roof. The pipes will hide any solar panels and if you put one pipe sideways above the roof vent you could actually vent the interior through it. Nothing incriminating will show from prying eyes and it will really make the van really look like a plumber’s van.

  25. Charlie Colp on March 13, 2021 at 12:30 am

I live full time in my van and use it as a pilot car to escort oversized trucks, so to the cops its like seeing a semitruck parked when i have my OVERSIZE sign up on the top of the van. So i guess I’m doing the Stealth wrong, I’m siting hear with the generator running side door open so i can keep a eye on my stake cooking on the grill and 8 years and knock from the cops free and its easer to tell you the states i have not camped in are Hawaii and Alaska.

We’re here to help each other on being safer and smarter. PVC pipe to house a protective screen for the solar panels and or solar water heater. Remote activation of a 12v servo that pulls the screen in place at night. This will help elemental damage and also people in higher places will not see the panels. The screen can also have whatever image you want or just being the same color as the vehicle for simpler is better. Thank you for the upload I’m looking forward to more videos.

Having climbed from the back of your Van into the Cab and before starting your engine to drive off, Use an old Surveillance Trick to alleviate suspicion, simply open and then Slam your Drivers Door Shut. This simple Trick will prepare people’s minds for the Van Driving Away.

13:30 — Please keep in mind that in some areas, dumping any liquid on the ground that isn’t clean water is super illegal. Where I live, the sanitary services district is ravenous about controlling runoff, and if they get a whiff of you dumping water with food or soapy residue in it, they will ruin your day.

Oh, you won’t get caught? Businesses that use a lot of water have to pay steep fees to the sanitation district for the right to do so, and they can be very pissy if they see people doing for free what they have to pay a fortune for, so if you park near a business that uses a lot of water, don’t think that no one will notice. What kind of businesses use a lot of water? Anything involving food, cleaning, certain kinds of manufacturing; many more than you might expect.

Something I did, though it’s not free is I joined the Lodge of Elks in my hometown. It costs $125 a year. The thing is they allow their members to leave their cars in the parking lots after a night of drinking. They also promote RV traveling. And, once you join the Elks in your hometown, you have the privilege to visit every single Lodge in the country. They have bathrooms all day until they close (usually 2AM) and many of them have showers you can use. They have a bar (if you drink) and pretty cheap full menu restaurant inside. And, if you have to much to drink, you don’t have to worry about driving as you can go right to your bed in the parking lot and sleep it off right there.

ULTIMATE STEALTH for one person: I live in a Dodge Grand Caravan. It looks like every other minivan and blends in way better than larger vans, and what’s special about this minivan is that you can take out the Stow’n’Go seats that fold into the floor, and use the large floor cavities for storage! Very spacious in the back for a minivan, totally comfortable to live in (with one person). 😀
