I live in a rental house that is incredibly small (800sq ft…maybe) and the front room was extended from an enclosed front porch turned interior room. The porch part is deck wood painted gray and the original room has dark wood flooring that I can’t match. I want to make it monocomatic, but how do I make it tie in? I don’t want to put in a lot of money because it is a rental.

  5. josie corpus on November 19, 2021 at 11:28 am

Thanks. I always thought that floors and walls should be opposite colors, and that coffee tables were best square.

How do I know if my space is small or medium?

  10. Rem Nant on November 19, 2021 at 11:34 am

Hey, I know you’re doing videos for decorating spaces people live in, but could you do one for staging a space being sold? I have a friend who’s selling a house that has no dining room but does have a smallish living room. He’s filled it with large bulky living room furniture and is trying to cram in more. He chose these pieces to maximize lounging space for himself and his kids. He maintains this is the setup he likes but I can’t shake the feeling this isn’t the best choice for staging a house to be sold. I’d appreciate it if you could do a video on this topic that way I could show him and maybe help him finally get his house sold. Your knowledge seems to come from experience rather than from trends. Thanks in advance!

  17. JC Eberle on November 19, 2021 at 11:43 am

I like the idea of a monochromatic room being dark, which is what I’m living with now—dark taupe or khaki walls, with a similar color floor—unfortunately broken by white trim.

  18. chonger on November 19, 2021 at 11:43 am

perfect for my 500sq ft condo in Vancouver hhahah

  19. Mira Kamal on November 19, 2021 at 11:46 am

Liked the video in the first 10 seconds. Love your energy and personality.

  20. Edward Casper on November 19, 2021 at 11:47 am

You forgot futons as dual-purpose furniture, but designers hate futons.

  21. artistdrummer45 on November 19, 2021 at 11:49 am

in the other small space video you said NOT to put shelves in small spaces because it leads to clutter and a big mess, and here you insist on shelves and shelves. and storage space.

  22. Bilinda Law-Morley on November 19, 2021 at 11:50 am

I’m in love with the lighted branch behind Lisa. Really hoping someone can suggest where I could get it from?

  23. Tara Mooney on November 19, 2021 at 11:51 am

Haha! “Hide all your crap in it!” I love it!

  24. sazena on November 19, 2021 at 11:53 am

I would also add, go light on the plants… I’ve seen some small places with so many plants that they ended up looking like a jungle, but not in a good way. Thank you for this video, Lisa.

  25. supriya shenoy on November 19, 2021 at 11:53 am

I hadnt heard the tonal rug one. Its a good one indeed.

  26. Janine Svitavsky on November 19, 2021 at 11:53 am

    Loved it, love your energy.
Can you add in small houses? Not all small places are city dwelling apartments, we have no ikea for 100s of miles

  27. CivilPulse on November 19, 2021 at 11:56 am

600 sq feet is pretty big for a small apartment, if that makes sense 😅

  28. artistdrummer45 on November 19, 2021 at 11:56 am

the small space I need to furnish has a white tile floor, and you said the area rugs should be close in color. 1. what’s wrong with using a colored rug if it matches the decor?

  29. Anita Prasad on November 19, 2021 at 11:56 am

    Very helpful Lisa
    Thank you ❤️

  30. CG G on November 19, 2021 at 11:56 am

  31. Jean on November 19, 2021 at 11:56 am

Lisa, these are the best ideas for small space living that I’ve come across – thank you. Love your suggestion for small stools instead of coffee tables. And the bar cart on wheels – super idea.

  32. Sallie Ann Westbrook on November 19, 2021 at 11:57 am

I bought an IKEA sectional for my wee apartment in Chicago. Super comfy, and maximized space.

  33. የድንግል ልጅ on November 19, 2021 at 12:02 pm

I followed everything what you said but now one more things left I wish you have video for floor color for laminate or hardwood

  34. Tasy on November 19, 2021 at 12:02 pm

I really love these tips! Unfortunately my flat is even too small for them 😀 What bothers me most with many tips in general is that they are not really suitable for a student apartment or an apartment you don’t own yourself. I’m not gonna invest hundreds and hundreds of euros in a flat I live in for maybe a few years only 🙂

  35. Jones Road All Day on November 19, 2021 at 12:03 pm

I ♥️ your tip Lisa about getting the furniture scale right! My home is less than 1000 ft.² and we have a huge dining table set and a huge couch in the living room. Our bedrooms are cluttered by huge furniture it’s very difficult to get in

  36. Toni Noel on November 19, 2021 at 12:05 pm

Yes! Thank you! We just bought a new home and it’s smaller, but low ceilings until we vault them!
Question, how do we configure furniture in a room that is offset and/or has a fireplace in a corner, but no room to make it the center of the room.

  37. E Dralio on November 19, 2021 at 12:06 pm

My question is how much should an apartament be to be considered small. For example a 2 bedroom apartament of 78 m² can be one?

  38. Betty Cockman on November 19, 2021 at 12:06 pm

Appreciated concise editing and many pictutes to make excellent advice appealing. EXCELLENT PODCAST,!

  39. T Wilde on November 19, 2021 at 12:06 pm

Yep, Lisa, it was the coffee table suggestion that was my favorite and most useful. Just bought a great little 1907 cottagey place that I’m in love with (finishing my teeny tiny bathroom remodel that I commented about in another vid). But the coffee table search is ongoing. I like the idea of two-ish small tables. The search continues. Thank you again!

    @Lisa Holt Design
Your tips are useful, but I’d love for you to watch a couple of seasons of Tiny House Nation and then revisit your idea of what constitutes a "small space."
