One must remember restaurants are cyclic. Customers cycle returant to restaurant no matter how good, they eventually will be bored of it.

    Reasons bars fail

    -lack of financial lacking
-rent must be no more than 10% of all sales
    -systems in place
-owner manages the system not the employees
    -poor customer service
-don’t stop marketing ( give customers in your place a premium experience)
-ask how is everything going, introduce as owner / manager
    – not measuring, monitoring or following up
-in god we trust, all other must bring data
    -poor execution plans and goals

  8. TheFujiwuji on June 26, 2021 at 2:14 am

at 2:17 he says your "occupancy" should not exceed 10% of total sales." What is "occupancy"? Occupancy normally refers to how many people are physically in the bar, but total sales is a dollar amount. Those are completely different categories, so I don’t understand what he’s talking about.

#1: Shitty Bartenders with attitudes who pay more attention to their friends than people that actually tip.

  17. SD on June 26, 2021 at 2:21 am

Get out ofnthe mindset that "you work for yourself." It is such a tired cliche that some owners take too far.

    You don’t.

You work for your customers. They pay your bills and mortgage.

I guess that applies to.any business.

  18. James Davis on June 26, 2021 at 2:21 am

Great points but I would have to say there is one other issue and, to me, it is the biggest issue. Marketing. Marketing is EVERYTHING you do to make a sale or perform a service for a client. Without marketing you are f’d. Really f’d, and not in a good way.

Customer service is a form of marketing, advertising is a form of marketing, the ambience in your bar is a form of marketing, the quality of your food is a form of marketing, and location is of course a form of marketing. Marketing is king. Without it you will fail. I see so many businesses, not just bars, lose sight of this.

I agree have a great system for inventory staff bookkeeping and accountability. Also stop thinking the customers always right your team customers and business have to be respected 100% of the time! Learn to use social media. My third rule do not work with womanizers their heads in a different place.

Thx so much I’m still a teen but I want to start a bar when I’m older so you know ima try so hard and the personality part will work out for me I’m good at that I’ll make people feel wanted

  29. Zach Williams on June 26, 2021 at 2:33 am

Musician here. Everytime I play, I keep the people there buying more food/drink, but the managers are always a pain in the ass to get the show booked. I barely like dealing with em.

Either I’m still not doing my job well, or I chalk it down to bad management. It’s probably my area, but a lot of them just don’t know how to properly promote their own places. I never got why a bar/restaurant wouldn’t promote their entertainment. It’s like trying to play any sport without a ball and expecting to score…

  30. Ouis Sandy on June 26, 2021 at 2:35 am

Finally F yelp if your on yelp and not in your business you will lose staff!

I found this very informative. Looking into opening a bar with appetizers only. Any helpful videos to get me started ? I have waitering, catering, bar tending in my history. Not giving up day job for this. Hoping it will be a source of income in the future.

Im planning to open a bar in 10 years from now. All of the stuff you said is already in my mingld to be successful. I guess i was made for this.
If you are common sense or just so mature person, this is a peace of cake. Everything looks so easy, now money is the thing. Without money you can’t start anything.

  47. jeffl56 on June 26, 2021 at 3:01 am

Realize this is several years old, but having done 1000’s of presentations, see a way you might improve here. One of my basic rules is never read your slides. Your audience is doing that while you are talking. Rather just repeating what’s there, make sure the key points are made – prefereably with different words – or with examples. Stories about why the points you are making are crucial. Another approach is to reduce the words, so your audience is paying attention to what you are saying versus reading. A simple way to do this is to replace the words with a picture, or a single word. Liked your presenation even with these comments….
