Love this !! I have searched for a video like this !!! Love how you added to the kitchen, my place is outdated and not much lighting I have a lot of dark Ikea furniture from my past apartment and well now I gotta make it work for my new place because I’m not trying to spend on new furniture but not sure how to make the dark furniture give a more rustic vibe ?

This was actually helpful. The island idea was my favorite. Brilliant idea. At first, I was like great…..now I have to learn how to sew. Thank you making this video. I can’t wait to see part 2.

Back in the 1960s we started housekeeping. We had ALL second or third hand furniture from dumpster dives, along with a few chairs and stuff from my parents’s home they wanted to discard. We would shop estate sales for old, worn furniture we could refinish. I remember painting metal folding chairs golden yellow, making our LR curtains from fabric remnants, making sofa slipcovers after the original ones wore out. I refinished a LOT of furniture and also we bought furniture kits to assemble, stain and varnish, or unfinished pine furniture we stained and varnished. I still have some of that and we are now retired. Our first apartment was on the second floor of a newspaper distribution garage in a small town in PA. You would never imagine, looking at the building, that there was an apartment up those steps. It was tiny but we were happy there, eventually moving into our first home in upstate NY where we actually bought a kitchen table and four chairs NEW. After serving us and our two kids until they were teens we bought another set, and since we were in FL by that time it was a round glass topped table with rattan chairs. Now we have a gorgeous, Amish made arts and crafts quarter sawn oak DR furniture. So we have been through four or five sets of furniture to eat off of. IF we’d have bought that Amish furniture for our FIRST set imagine how much in debt we’d have been and how beat up it would be by now. NEVER go into debt to buy FURNITURE. NEVER, NEVER. Dumpster dive or buy used until you have had your messy babies and toddlers, once they are "civilized" then buy items you can afford. SAVE UP. Buy fewer clothes, cosmetics, hair products, cleaning products. All that stuff really adds up and we Americans buy WAY TOO MUCH of everything. In watching cleaning videos it never ceases to amaze me how many beauty products, shampoos, and cosmetics people buy and never use up. What a waste — vinegar, bleach, coconut oil, toothpaste and other basic supplies do the same job for only pennies. Buy second hand or dumpster dive basic furniture and let the family use it. It will get beat up but good, especially if you add dogs into the bargain. Kids are hard on furniture. Eventually if you still have it when they begin THEIR housekeeping give them the old stuff to paint or refinish and use, and buy something new you really want and plan to keep until you die. To me sofas are somewhat of an exception. You do need VERY comfortable supportive seating. Rockers can be very comfortable. Lighting is vastly expensive. Buy as classic lamps as possible so you don’t have to change out lighting to new faddish styles every five or ten years. Make it last 15 years before refurbishing. LESS IS MORE. The less stuff you have the faster you can clean it, the lighter you feel inside a home, and the serener it is. If your house is full of clutter it takes forever to clean (many people just give up and NEVER clean since they are overwhelmed with junk). Organize. Use shoe boxes and Amazon shipping boxes to make dividers for your drawers. Save jars for storage — wash them out and paint the lids rather than buy new storage at the expensive container store. Dollar store often has cheap but good containers and bins. Olde Time Pottery has cheap glass storage jars (not Pottery Barn which is way too expensive — VERY overpriced — you are buying the name and paying a lot for it.)

What a breath of fresh air – So many cleaning and organizing video are in totally staged – super done up houses – so when you live in an older, non-renovated apartment you don’t necessarily relate to them. I too have curb side and second hand items and still have a way to go to be really organized. I am on a tight budget and your video inspired me and made me feel good about decorating on a dime!

I had previously covered our electrical box with some art, then we had a small fire at home and the firefighters struggled to find the electrical box to cut off the electricity, since then I decided to never cover the electrical box again.

I’m so thankful for this! We are moving into our rental house, which is super cheap, but it’s also very outdated! However it’s just helping us get closer to buying our dream home! ❀

my husband and I are about to move to a two-bedroom ugly apartment because we have a baby on the way before we buy our first house. Let me tell you that I am going to have to get very creative in there so thank you for all the tips : )

You look like Marylin Monroe. So many girls try to copy her but I don’t think you even have to try. The resemblance is amazing!

Wow finally a video with actual helpful tips! ☺️

  22. Jade San Jose on January 16, 2022 at 3:34 pm

Make sure for safety purposes you can somehow highlight where the electrical panel is. My husband is an electrician and when he first moved in and saw that I covered it with a framed photo he flipped lol. ( imagine when Phoebe told her fireman boyfriend she would make him a candle light picnic in the park haha). Apparently if there is a fire or some electrical emergency responders may try to come in and shut it down but they would need to see where it is quickly.

Love the tips! Looking forward to your part 2 video!

  24. Sarah holland on January 16, 2022 at 3:37 pm

Great tips. Dulux Timeless is a beautiful warm white paint if your Landlord lets you paint over the magnolia (I’ve found most don’t mind if you tell them it’s white, it saves them a repaint between tenants ) .

This is such a great video. You’re so sweet and give me hopew my ugly living space. I always feel ashamed to have ppl over.
I love how honest you are saying you have hand me downs and found finds, not making $500 book case sound like pocket change. **subscribed.

Growing up poor has its advantages, you learn how to use what you have and as an adult, it’s a creative outlet and challenge! I would have liked to see more "doing" than explaining, but nice video!

The β€œinternet/phone box on the wall” is really a phone mount plate. It was the easy way to mount and connect a wall mounted phone. See the end of this video: https://youtu.be/HkuPrpqUUx0

  44. The Tudors on January 16, 2022 at 3:59 pm

Okay. Not to sound negative. But you’re apartment is spacious compare to what we have in Dublin. Try no window single sized rooms and a small window in living room overlook garage. Living room so small with kitchen at the side. Aside from that, your tips are helpful, I guess we should just be thankful with what we have and try to make the best of of it by transforming it to what our eyes pleases.

Oh, I really like putting cloth around the table bottom, to use as an island . I was going to add a small table but thought it would look odd lol My new apartment has very little counter space & hardly any cabinets for food/dishes. That way I can have more storage under the table Yeah Love my yard sales & it’s coming spring !!

  48. Snow Queen on January 16, 2022 at 4:05 pm

Loved this. Wish you were still making videos πŸ₯² you filled a void on YouTube by making actual relatable content. Hope you are doing wellβ™₯️

My room has been the same for 13 years, decorated and painted by my parents to look appropriate for a 5 month old girl, so you can imagine how that looks. Green walls and pink furniture, looks great- I’m trying to make it feel less like im in one of those creepy nostalgic childhood room photos like places you see in your dreams

Wow, genious tips! I move this week into a new, very old and really ugly house, your video helped me a lot, thank you very much πŸ’•
