Hey 🙂 I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4×4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road – I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I’ll see you out on that open road 🚐

**My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136″ WB with 25K miles**

New subscriber here. You truly have taken van living videos to another level. Sincere, pleasant, and genuinely helpful. No sense of ego. I lived in a van two different times in L.A. many years ago but was nothing like your experience. Very primitive. It would be great if you had a drawing where the winner could spend a day traveling with you. The serenity that you have would make it thoroughly enjoyable.🏜

I currently work from home (sales calls inbound and outbound) and need fast internet (100mb or higher). Would you think something like the Tesla starlink system or something similar would provide the higher speeds needed and the signal quality needed to be confidently connected? With the hotspot, you have to be within the range of a tower, but the starlink system apparently just needs a clear view of the sky

Your six string with two strings gone. I broke those two also, and no, have not replaced them yet. lol

  13. dana miller on September 28, 2022 at 5:48 am

On a nice clear Dark night the sky is full of beautiful stars and once you learn how to recognize them you’ll feel more confident and identifying them and perhaps if you have the right photo equipment you can get some good photos I’m not sure how you would do that I’m not a photographer…u said ur a photographer.

Lol I can sometimes use 30GB a DAY on my ATT iPad plan. $20/mo truly unlimited, just put the SIM card in a portable hotspot and done. Phone hotspots are such a pain.

I got the Drive X… No idea what I was thinking, just looked up the comparison with the Drive Reach and Reach is better. Saved it for an upgrade in a few months. Yay learning 🙂

New subscriber here. I know this video is older, however, I love it, and not because I live in AZ but because the desert sunsets and sunrises are magnificent.

Hey! I actually have a dedicated wifi hotspot device from my internet provider… I have to say that it actually works better! It has more antennas on it to get better speeds. For example, my 5G wifi hotspot device from T-mobile can get me up to 600mbps in an urban area where my phone might get 100 max…

also, they dont put a limit on those devices like a hotspot from your phone!

  32. speed8877 on September 28, 2022 at 6:11 am

I like the set up you got which is awesome. I don’t know much about out West. Are the nights very cool as I would think the days are very warm. I can’t remember from your videos but do you use solar panels?

  33. Alain Belanger on September 28, 2022 at 6:12 am

That is great that you leave your inverter off when you don’t need it. There is real benefits to DC electrical versus AC, which is always creating fields even when not in use. It is my opinion why some people feel better living in cars (DC electrical). The only thing to watch out for is using cell phone inside your van, as it becomes a low power microwave oven. There used to be phones that would accept an external antenna, like the one you have for boosting your signal. Those microwaves also bother a lot of people. If you know any phones that take external antennas, or an easy phone modification, I’d love to hear about it!

  39. JUCK on September 28, 2022 at 6:18 am

Just catching up on you. I actually let your adds run. I hope that makes you more money. If you are ever in Minnesota you can do you laundry at my house for free.

I’m surprised that you don’t have a bike. You do a great job making videos

  45. dana miller on September 28, 2022 at 6:25 am

The sky looks beautiful…amazing views….if u are out west in a location with little or no light pollution…check out the stars in the night sky…. easy ones to notice are the North Star the Big Dipper Cassiopeia The Southern Star Orion’s Belt and Orion and the Southern Cross and Scorpius depending on what time of year Orion is out during the winter months and Scorpius is out there in the summer months.

In Germany we use Teltonika Networks industrial routers for Van’s wifi and internet speed applications. (Made in EU) Speeds ramp up to 400 mb/s. Highly recommend to test it out. Works great. Mostly we use RUTX11 https://teltonika-networks.com/product/rutx11/ or RUT955 https://teltonika-networks.com/product/rut955/ as they have SIM failovers and Load Balancing features.

How do you budget? Do you use software or have you set up your own spreadsheet? I need help learning how to budget so I can start my van life here in the next couple years! At least that’s my target for when I’m gonna start! Thanks for all your amazing videos and pics! I hope to one day experience my own real life pics and vids!

    I love you!!!!!

  49. dana miller on September 28, 2022 at 6:30 am

And I don’t have to tell you but you can navigate with the Northern Star and The Southern Star It’ll point you in the Solar North and solar South which don’t get it mixed up with magnetic north and magnetic South because that deviates throughout the world depending on what part of the country in the world you are … where the solar is more constant.
