VAN LIFE With PETS – What Are The Options?

VAN LIFE With PETS – What Are The Options?

Are you a vanlifer with a pet? Let me know in the comments!

As a solo traveller I’ve been thinking a lot about the great companionship a pet can provide. So I did I bit of research and in this video I share my findings with you.

Hello if you’re new and welcome back to my lovely subscribers! I’m Ellie and I’m about to embark on a trip around NSW in my self-converted 2007 Toyota Hiace SLWB camper. Thank you so much for your support on my journey!

Consider subscribing if you like my content! I post every Saturday morning.

I’ve tried to give an overview of the types of pets most suitable for van life but I haven’t covered the less common pets. Remember a pet is a commitment for it’s whole life so think carefully before adopting and try to adopt from a shelter to save a life!

I hope you enjoyed my breakdown of the pet options for van life.

Have a fab weekend!

Did you consider rabbits? I have 2 house rabbits and am wondering whether vanlife could be an option for me. Mine are free roam and litter trained just like cats but I assume there would have to be some kind of built in cage for safety when on the road

yeah I agree that while being a solo traveler a pet can be good for company, there are so many places they can’t go or aren’t allowed. I’ve done both (dog and no dog) and prefer a housesitter and go it alone

good info! I can attest to rats being great pets! I have never heard that you should have more than one. my sister and I had one as a pet when we were young.. she was out of the cage at least 4-5 hours/day. then my son had one (named Sugar, cuz she was so sweet!). I think as long as they get social time, one is fine. (no research done.. just personal experience). I am not on the road yet, and putting off getting another pet since our dog passed.. but maybe another rat is in our future when we hit the road in the spring. cheers! (beautiful build btw)

I think rats are a good choice, intelligent and social! Another pet worth mentioning is a rabbit, even if I know Australia had a bad experience with them way back. I am a dedicated cat person since many years so my choice is easy!

Hey Ellie! This was a great video. I know this is sightly off topic but I think we can help each other out. I’m trying to become an editor and build some portfolios while making some money to start my own van life adventure. If you’re interested in talking please reply and I’ll drop you my email!

I’d like a dog but I work full time and would feel guilty about leaving them in my van all day while I’m at work.

Having pets with you on the road is a double edges endeavor. It will hinder your capabilities of go to certain places. I would rather do road trip of one or two weeks and return to home base for recuperation and human contact.

ball pythons (the snake Jennelle has) are a popular and docile species. Most snakes are low maintenance in the sense that they don’t require much care, just feeding/cleaning the enclosure every few weeks, and even then, depending on factors like age and species, feeding can range from once or twice a week, to monthly or even longer. However, an adult ball python will need a 30 to 40 gallon tank, which takes a lot of space in a van build. Ball pythons need a heat mat under the tank instead of a lamp (they are not a basking species) and owners constantly have to keep track of the temperature on both the hot/ cool side as well as humidity. I advise anyone interested in getting a ball python as a travel companion or just a pet in general to do their research because they live 20+ years and grow to like 5 feet long so enclosure space is important for their well being!! Also consider how you are feeding snakes while in a van because depending on location you may have difficulty finding a pet store selling rats/mice and if you feed them frozen-thawed you need to keep them in a freezer. Honestly I don’t recommend traveling with a snake unless you have had some experience with them already and your van has all the necessary equipment and space (like how does all the stuff in the enclosure not slide around while driving 😅 and how do you bring one into another country Jennelle I need answers!). Sorry for the long ted talk lol
