How Did We Get Here?
Abandoning our Van in Africa https://bit.ly/2Kff0HT
After an incredible 3 years of living, working, and traveling in our self converted Sprinter Van we made the very tough decision to abandon it in Africa to take a rescue flight back to Canada. As it has for all of us this global pandemic has flipped our world upside down. When our Prime Minister announced that he was sending repatriation flights over to Africa to pick up Canadians who were stuck (due to border closures) we consulted with friends and family closest to us and realized that in this time of crisis we should be back in our home country. Halting our dream of driving around the world was a hard pill to swallow which is why we knew we needed a big project to keep our mind + body busy while social distancing back here in Toronto. Enter building an off-grid tiny house on wheels!! This is going to be our 3rd time converting an empty cargo van into a campervan and we are both excited and nervous to take on this project. We want this build to be the ULTIMATE OFF-GRID VAN 🚐

So what was the actual cable size problem ? What size was you originally using ? It looked heavy stuff on the first attempt ? Any details ?

  2. Geoffrey Lyford on February 4, 2021 at 9:59 pm

Eamon was right to check the wire sizes !!!! There was another remedy, which I am using for our system, inspired by you guys in general if not specifically. If the electrical system were configured at 24V instead of 12V, you could have used half the size of wire. Most things in a van can run at 24V and if you need 12V or any other voltage, then a voltage converter is an adaptation for various other loads at any other voltage. For instance, inverters, fridges, compressors and other heavier loads will run at 24V. This is efficient and saves wire. The way to set up a 24V battery bank in this case is to run not all six Battleborn units in parallel, but to link two parallel groups of three in series. This cuts the amps in half and doubles the voltage. Performance would be the same, if not improved. It also matches the higher voltage produced by a massive bank of solar panels, given the solar controller you have. Anyway, loved the adventure, as usual!

For extra protection they could’ve cover the exposed knotts and bolts from the battery with liquid plastic.

  4. Jonathan Pearson on February 4, 2021 at 10:00 pm

Hey guys. Your equipment list in the description doesn’t have the solar panels in it. What do you have? And the amazing battery set up too, please! Thanks.

  5. Jan S on February 4, 2021 at 10:01 pm

I’m amazed you guys all know each other. I watch Trent and Allie, which lead me to you and then I saw a greeting from Kara and Nate. Your van looks amazing. I haven’t gotten to your cabin build, although I see you have moved to this new project. So much energy!

Disappointed in the mildly sexist comment.

10 times more disappointed it wasn’t addressed in the comments after so many people were clearly bothered by it.

Accountability is so important as influencers…

    I think I’ve got you beat , my rig is very small 26 square feet with a 24 volt system , running a 24 volt freezer ( drawing only 1.5 amps ) a 24 to 12 volt converter a 250 , and 2500 watt inverters I also have 680 watts of solar .
I built mine so I can run saws , drills , misc. carpenter tools . Etc. I prefer a 24 over 12 volt system for several reasons .

I’m new to your channel … went from a video from 2 years ago to 2 weeks ago I think. Anyway, congrats on the light ( Eric 👍👍 shout out ).
You guys are amazing. New Sub ‼️

  33. Monus Brewer on February 4, 2021 at 10:37 pm

Just a FYI, the "hard" heat shrink is called Raycam. Just be careful if you’re using it, it has a hot glue on the inside that melts and helps adhere to the surface. 👍

Can I ask why Victron over Renogy and did you need the 5000 Watt or do you think a 3000 watt would have worked as well. I am just about to install a similar setup but only went with the 3000 Watt. I’m considering Renogy because of the lower price in Canada ($1000 difference)

  36. maggie ferrell on February 4, 2021 at 10:39 pm

OMG You are friends with TRENT??? I’ve watched Trent & Allie like forever dude!! Love BOTH your channels. THATS SO COOL💕💕💕💕💕

This week’s ep. was so good I just watched it through TWICE and it still made me laugh out loud again 😂 I love Bob, I love Eamon’s dancing, I love Bec being a #badass errand gal, I LOVED the music and the transitions (so good guys, honestly), and I loved that no matter how frustrating everything got, you guys stayed positive! Such an inspiration. Keep it up, already can’t wait for next week!!!!!! 😍

    What happend to trinity

  45. SydneySustainably on February 4, 2021 at 10:51 pm

    No snoozin’ here!
In fact, I wouldn’t have minded seeing MORE electrical. I plan to do some for my RV. Biggest challenge in my build will probably be how others view what I’m capable of because I’m a girl and what they’re willing to teach me. So I often go to YouTube to learn. Kinda disappointing seeing the stereotypes here too.
Huge fan of you guys, but not a fan of that remark, and I hope the mistake is recognized 🙂

  46. Tim Lambert on February 4, 2021 at 10:54 pm

Our van is outside awaiting the build out right now!!!😀so inspiring much love Tim and Sheryl
