Great video, thank you! I’ve day hiked quite a few miles at a time and a went on a few camping trips with some of the same gear. I think it’s the marathoner in me that wants to take it further with backcountry camping now. I also would like to take my border collie along, he loves to camp and hike. I see you have your dog and his/her own back pack.
Favorites: Palo Duro Canyon, for mountain biking and starry nights. Camped at Garner State park in Texas last year with my boyfriend and the new pooch. Heading back next week; the water is amazing and the park is dog friendly. BTW I’m about to turn 61. You are never too old to try something new.

Pretty informative and helpful on everything except the pepper spray and knife. I wouldn’t rely on a can of anything to save me from being eaten by a bear. The knife choice is… interesting.

I was into deep wilderness backpacking in gila wilderness NM in 80s. I now carry a go emergency small backpack in vehicle.

Great video thanks, the bear canister is just a plastic barrel, like 5$ worth, we use the same from wallmart for keeping pickels for the winter. Really not worth pay 100$ for a plastic.

Ever tried using 550 cord? It will save you a little space and tiny weight but I use it for everything.

do you take a gun with you when you do back country camping?
do you bring an axe or machete ?

  19. Aaron Cowan on December 21, 2021 at 2:01 pm

These are all the most expensive brands! Hiking isnt about all that flash and money. It’s taking your grandpas military bag, your Camelback, a tarp and poncho from goodwill with a slingshot and a fixed blade. Maybe bug skeet if you live in swamp land like I do. Smart wool and osprey are red flags for nancies

  20. Wiser Than You on December 21, 2021 at 2:01 pm

These recommendations are good, but that’s a crazy heavy load-out. For the same or less money you can get a smarter and significantly lighter load for better miles.

Also, buffs don’t do anything to stop covid. Misinformation. Just goes to show how stupid the general population is and unwarranted paranoia surrounding covid.

Count every ounce , because every ounce counts! This was a mantra in the Boy Scouts. Then there is the saying, " Back packing; where you spend a fortune to live like a homeless person"

"Most important piece of equipment for a backpacking trip"…. a good headlamp? LOL I just thought that was funny. I’m enjoying the video, and I’m a subscriber!

to be more eco friendly you can pack your own minute-5 minute cooked foods such as ready pasta (ramen & Mac&cheese), mashed potatoes, really any dried pre cooked foods and put them into re-usable silicon bags. you pour boiling water into the bag with whichever dried foods you choose and you have a meal! I would just recommend trying it at home to make sure it cooks how you like it before you go out.

I went backpacking last week with my girlfriend. We setup shop on a camping spot completely slanted. In order to make it so we weren’t sliding down our sleeping pad, we set up our tent on a bush😂😂 literally holes all over my tent from sticks that stuck through the tent, and my sleeping pad 🙁

Can’t believe everything weighs very little, or next to nothing… Could you give us real weights instead of subjective opinions? For instance; my down puffer jacket weighs 5.6oz. Does yours weigh 6.5oz, 4.2oz, or 8.7oz? All of those are ‘next to nothing’ weights, but I’d prefer the 4.2oz ‘next to nothing’ weight jacket better than the 8.7oz ‘next to nothing’ weight one. Get it?

I want to pack two backpacks with supplies and be dropped on a deserted island with some wildlife and fruit to survive and chronicle my adventure. I just need somebody to fly me and drop me off. Or a show to take is seriously and film it. I want to go tribal …!!!
