When Should You NOT Paint Wood Furniture? Let's Find Out – Thrift Diving

Not every piece of wood should be painted. So when should you NOT paint wood furniture, then?? Here are my thoughts on when you should put the paint brush down and slowly step away. Plus, in this video I’m going to do a little test. Can you strip Annie Sloan Chalk Paint from wood, in the event you later decide to refinish a piece of wood back to its natural beauty? Let’s find out!

Maybe that cupboard would look good as a little bookcase or cubby storage for your kids. Strip it down to the natural wood, maybe stain it, take off the door, maybe take off the legs to make it less wobbly.

    Great advice.

Magnificent video !!! I have some pieces that I have painted … which I now regret . And now I know that the world is not over for my furniture ! Thank you !

i’ve always just used wall paint on my stuff oops i hope it comes off well if i ever need it to. My favorite way to paint is to accent the piece with paint rather than cover the whole thing in paint adds fun color but also leaves some of the beautiful wood

Can you do a whole video just stripping paint? It is so soothing to look at.

  8. Smith Smith on December 15, 2020 at 11:01 pm

Just discovered your channel and I’m happy I did. You do a good job of explaining things in a straightforward, relatable way. So far I’ve only painted pieces that were already painted before or damaged. Wood grain can be beautiful and I enjoy some natural elements in my house. I agree – think about it first, and then do whatever works for you.

Paint everything white! Your table, the chairs, your toilet, your hair, everything! Hell, find your grandmother and brush her down white too! Catch your neighbors cat and white him too! LOL!

Thank goodness I saw this video in time. I picked up a pair of teak chairs on CL. $20.00 for both. I was about to paint them bright green until I saw this video. Did a search this image. I found one that had just sold. Just 1 chair AND it had a very poorly done and VERY noticable repair done at some point. Anyway, it sold for $2,800.00! FOR 1?! I have two and both are MINT! Made in England. Mid 1800s. Designed for use in a Solarium or Garden. Maybe the Duchess of Disheveled and her secret lover sat in my chairs. Stealing longing glances. Passing watercress sandwiches in the hopes of brushing fingertips unnoticed by the other guests viewing the croquet match on the lawn. Scandalous! 🤣

Do NOT Paint Wood Furniture… EVER! Paint is lazy, stain and clear coat is always the higher road. Perfection is not easy, but it is much more rewarding. I would have been much more impressed if she had actually shown the refinishing of that hideously painted cabinet. it looked like it had decent wood grain underneath it. Also, even pine can look beautiful with the proper stain and poly. Never Paint wood it is the cardinal sin of woodworking.

  12. Sue h on December 15, 2020 at 11:08 pm

I would never paint or not paint because someone yearsssss from now might want to remove it!! My painted furniture is a piece of art! Not just making it a different color..

    Your explanations are therapeutical.

Can you Paint laminate furniture? I saw your video on painting a dresser, but I wasn’t sure if it was laminate or not…I found 3-different products…Beyond Paint(your video) no sanding & no primer…Retique It Liquid Wood-no sanding & no primer…& I was also thinking about using General Finishes Milk Paint it’s self leveling & self-sealing, but sanding & primer is required. I am not going for the distressed look either! I don’t know anything about primers for laminate furniture…how to do you find out which is best for laminate furniture-XIM 400 White or Zinsser Bin? I think those 2 primers or shellac primers too if that makes a difference on laminate furniture. I’m stuck & need help PLEASE! Which is the best option?

What do you do with the mess that you scrape off? How should you dispose of the paint/ stripper mix? Can you stuff a rag in the top of your bucket and toss it in the trash? Nobody ever talks about the clean up and disposal part of the project. ( I’ve never seen that part of a video if someone has talked about it, lol.)

  19. Em on December 15, 2020 at 11:17 pm

I have an ikea chest of drawers which I have had since I was a child which I have been thinking of painting white. It is a plain orangey wood and all of my bedroom furniture (wardrobe, bed, chest of drawers) is white. I’ve never painted any furniture before though so I’m a bit worried I might ruin it and it’ll look awful

  20. OxundHeiner on December 15, 2020 at 11:17 pm

reason nr. 6: wood colours are much easier to combine than solid colours.

if your colour is a nuance off, it won’t work with your carpet/wallcolor/window dressings/any fabric in the room. wood will always fit in somehow, it’s a neutral colour. you can also mix different woods.

  21. DAZZYDAY11 on December 15, 2020 at 11:20 pm

I have a piece of wood furniture (small dresser). It came painted white and a child put stickers on it. I want to paint it a darker color. Do I need to remove the white paint? I don’t understand how to know when removing the paint is necessary before painting it for myself

  22. Aaron Martinez on December 15, 2020 at 11:22 pm

Is shellac shiny? Will it accept paint??

  25. blueberry464 on December 15, 2020 at 11:25 pm

Thanks for these videos! If you do a coat of shellac before paint, do you still use a primer before the paint? I have a table from Craigslist for $10! Think it’s poplar. I’m planning to stain the top and paint the pedestal base, but just in case I strip it down the road… Thanks!

  26. tyblips on December 15, 2020 at 11:26 pm

Im scared to even refinish my old dressers. Because theyre from my great grandmothers house and i legit dont know what stain or finish they even were and its got stained detailing on it

Can you stripped stain from an old piece of furniture. The piece is over 40 years old. I just hate the dark stain on it.

  32. Kimberly Simmons on December 15, 2020 at 11:32 pm

Citristrip is the stripping agent that I use it is awesome. Can be used indoors. It removes paints, varnish, laquers, stains, etc. Great product! Just thought I’d give another option! Great video though!

  33. Linda Blackwell on December 15, 2020 at 11:32 pm

I found a desk for free, one side is fine one side had gotten wet and the veneers are peeling up like fingers curling. Can it be fixed? It’s a lovely old, old piece we love.

  34. Beach Blond on December 15, 2020 at 11:33 pm

Love your videos. I disagree a little about painting antiques, etc. If I have a family heirloom piece, I’m less inclined to paint it. However, if I luck into a piece via Craigslist that has no sentimental value to my family, that will work perfectly in my home if only it’s painted — then it’s getting a coat. I got an amazing deal on a baroque dining set with beautiful detail that’s just dark and gloomy and I am painting it and it’s gonna be stunning.

  35. Leah on December 15, 2020 at 11:34 pm

You are awesome!!! Keep doing what you,re doing girl!! God bless you!!!!

Great demonstration. I was wondering about removing it. 👍🏻

  37. oldproji on December 15, 2020 at 11:35 pm

When you paint furniture it is lost forever. Painting furniture destroys the integrity of a piece. Why not restore it to its original look? Up-cycling has gone mad around the world, so I guess I will be seen as a boring old purist. I’m not. I just love good design and original looking furniture.

  38. Nelson A. on December 15, 2020 at 11:35 pm

Hey nice video. Can you explain the difference between stain and painting wood. Does the wood finish on the piece after stripping come into play in your decision.

  39. 1959Berre on December 15, 2020 at 11:36 pm

Judge: "So, you killed your wife. Why did you?" Accused: "She painted an antique mahogany dressoir, your honour". Judge: "I understand, NOT guilty!" (slams gavel)

How apropos. Omgosh I LOVE your channel!!💖Had a thrift find. $20.00 for a pair of VERY uncomfortable chalk painted armchairs. I think, how can I remove chalk paint? Seats had hideous glued on fabric. They’re VERY heavy solid wood. I get the seat off, and I’m amazed to find flawless ordinal cane seats. 😱 Ok google! Turns out they’re Baker faux Bamboo Hollywood Regency Chippendale style accent chairs, and the same pair just sold on 1st Dibs for $2000.00! They didn’t even have the original cane seats. It was replaced with plain wood. No buyers remorse this time!😉😊

Thank you for making this video. I have a shop in my garage where I refinish and paint furniture. Recently I found a "treasure" in someone’s trash. A 100 year old solid oak buffet with all of the brass hardware in perfect condition. It needed a little glue to fix a couple of loose pieces but that was it. I have not been able to decide whether or not to paint it. So I am taking your advice and looking on etsy’s and a couple of other sites to check the value. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks so much😊

  45. The Painted Huckleberry on December 15, 2020 at 11:43 pm

I actually think you can do what you want with a piece, putting the guilt trip on someone for their creativeness is wrong. I can also show you a piece that sold for twice what it was worth as a natural wood piece. The old saying, beauty is in the eye of the beholder is true…so while I appreciate your view, dissing others for theirs is wrong everytime…. smh!

When testing chemicals to determine their odor, waft the air above the open container with your hand toward your nostrils. Please don’t do that “right up the middle”, “nose at the opening” procedure again. That can get you pretty badly injured. (I’m commenting to safeguard you, not hurt your feelings.) 🙂

  47. Kaila DaSilva on December 15, 2020 at 11:44 pm

I think you can and should paint anything you want if it’ll make you happy. I bought an antique desk for $300 and painted it because, for me, in my home, it’s worth more than that when it’s the way I like it. Painting furniture in ANY case, antique or not, is not a sin or a crime. People get way too uptight. In any case, it can always be removed in the future (even if it’s a lot of work).

Even refinishing can diminish value. Great content for a DIY vlog. I learned this from the Antiques Roadshow.

Hello! I’ve been researching about how to paint a piece of furniture that I own, which is originally satin white, it’s not just paint, it has like a super thick shiny finish, and I’d like to chalk painted. Do you know how could I prepare the surface before painting? Thank you a lot!
