Why Does England Make Vanlife So Hard? | Van Life UK

So as many people may already know vanlife in the uk is not as easy as some other places (Scotland is great though). But why does England have to make it so difficult to find park ups? There are so many places that they could utilise and even make money on for people travelling in vans and motorhomes, it just doesnt make sense to us why they dont do that. Surely it would have a positive impact on the economy too. Hopefully with all the influx of staycations and people travelling around this beautiful country by van they might change… You never know.

There are still plenty of places to park up and sleep but there is so many more that seem prefect for it that for some reason they just don’t allow it.

Thanks for watching, See you tomorrow!

It’s because ALL land in the UK is owned by somebody, there isn’t any common land these days 😲

It’s a shame. I suspect because of people ruining areas then everyone gets tarred with the same brush. Not sure what the answer is! Keep on trucking though. You’re doing great.

so nothing about why England makes it so hard??

  9. CAMPERVAN MAN on January 11, 2021 at 1:32 am

because of people like you putting f****** things on YouTube

  10. oh, eugh on January 11, 2021 at 1:33 am

Honestly, it comes down to racism against ethnic Gypsies & Travellers – a lot of the legislation around campsites & living roadside was based around forcing GRT (Gypsies, Roma, & Travellers) from our traditionally nomadic ways. Those of us that still live roadside are constantly chased around by councils, not allowed to stop for long unless they get lucky and a council is using Negotiated Stopping. That’s why England is so anti-vanlife. Because it has to be hardline anti-"anyone wanting to live in a caravan/van/etc" because that’s how they continually crack down on nomadic GRT.

  11. Zigisla on January 11, 2021 at 1:34 am

It is all to do with the 1960 Caravan and Land usage act. It has been updated over the years, but unless you have specific permission, you cannot camp overnight. Camp = Sleep overnight. You cannot compare the UK to Europe, because they do not have this act. Local Councils can relax this, but don’t. Far too many people think they have the right to park up and sleep on anyones land.

Why does England make van life so hard? Because they are building giant prison and van life is about freedom.

  14. Alb on January 11, 2021 at 1:37 am

In an alternative universe I’m living in a motorhome/van conversion and touring. I love these videos, but it’s a shame UK make it so hard, when I watch people touring other countries don’t seem to have the same hassles people here do.

  17. Chris A on January 11, 2021 at 1:45 am

The reason being that the UK does not want you guys polluting the place and leave you crap and junk everywhere.

  18. Michael Linarez on January 11, 2021 at 1:45 am

They won’t do anything to make it easier. Look at homeless people-they get moved from place to place and told to go to shelters that are full. Local councils do not want people who they see as non-council tax payers living in the area. It is wrong, but they have the same attitude as they do to gypsies. They don’t care where you stop, just don’t stop here. I think it will get worse, not better as councils try to squeeze every last penny of revenue out of people.

UK is shit for wild campnig, you need to get over to France, you can pick an choose where you overnight with no problems.

  23. Abodeless on January 11, 2021 at 1:53 am

    Worthwhile read https://andystrangewayindependent.com/2020/08/04/no-penalty-charge-notice-code-for-camping/

All no camping signs on council owned car parks are not legal.

  24. Motorhome Hobos on January 11, 2021 at 1:56 am

It’s great that you guys are highlighting this issue and it is certainly becoming more difficult to wild camp in a van. And we don’t think it’s solely because of C-19. Suffolk has been once of the least affected parts of the country when it comes to the virus yet there has been an increase in ‘no overnight camping’ signs going up. Just the other week we turned up to one well-known site only to find a new gate had been put up, keeping everyone out. We’re so concerned we’ve asked people to tell us of their experiences here https://motorhomehobos.com/van-life/wild-camping-in-a-motorhome/

  25. Lawrence reeves on January 11, 2021 at 1:56 am

Just went to colliford lake and spent the first 10 minutes picking up another person’s rubbish nearly a bin bag full, that’s one reason people hate us parking over night, good luck with your trip

  26. Rob Clague on January 11, 2021 at 1:58 am

I went down to Devon/Cornwall last month, got very stressed with lack of over night parking with signs up every where saying no over night camping in motorhomes/campervans. Not easy with the country lanes being packed as well.

  27. Lauren on January 11, 2021 at 1:59 am

I think someone mentioned it briefly in the comments here but it started with the stigma around gypsies and hippies. There’s actually a really bad incident that happened, wish I knew the name, I’ll try to find the link about it, but in the 80s or 90s UK police descended on a group of van-travelling hippies and committed really bad cases of brutality against them and took away some of the children and put them in care. A lot of the people who were present had to get trauma therapy.

  28. Dani on January 11, 2021 at 2:00 am

Good luck guys! I hate the control in this country. Well done for staying so positive 🙂

Yes its a great shame we dont have AIRES like the french

  33. Paul Keith on January 11, 2021 at 2:05 am

The answer – “traveller” communities. People who cause damage of one sort or another everywhere they go. Damage they never make good.

  34. Ade2Bee on January 11, 2021 at 2:06 am

For the same reason the travellers had to be got rid of, you are showing a piece of freedom, you are only free in Great Britain as long as you do what they want you to do and live your life the way they want you to live your life

  35. bikesbeersnbeats! on January 11, 2021 at 2:06 am

Because its nothing new. People have been living in vans for decades and unfortunately those same people took advantage of areas and ruined it for everyone. Then you have the travelers that dont help things.

Here in San Francisco, residential areas are very anti van life because they tend to leave trash and bring social issues.

  36. Steve Elkins on January 11, 2021 at 2:06 am

Too many abused it in the past. Even now there is rubbish left and urine dumped in lay-bys, why do people still find it acceptable to dump a gallon of piss in a public area?

  37. robert lee on January 11, 2021 at 2:07 am

  38. Ashley Burton on January 11, 2021 at 2:08 am

This is my biggest frustration with the UK in that we are very anti vanlife. Been travelling around Europe for the past 11 weeks & it couldn’t be any more different!

  42. sparkiegaz on January 11, 2021 at 2:13 am

Because they want to control you, ide love to move into a van work travelling around Uk but it’s so hard

  43. Alan Cooney on January 11, 2021 at 2:14 am

I’m not a "van" man, but can understand how annoyed you must feel about UK "restrictions"! We visited Bath in Somerset a few years ago and there were NO free toilets!!! All of them required a 20p coin. How silly can this be when councils should be welcoming visitors and tourists! Another place to avoid is Polperro in Cornwall – it has the most expensive pay and display car park "monopoly" – because there is no where else to park, or even walk from, if you visit Polperro!

  44. Perkin Warbeck on January 11, 2021 at 2:16 am

England is very densley populated and therefore is highly regulated. Loads of traffic and loads of potential for things to go wrong.
Scotland is a lot less populated per sq.m so they are more likely to be accepting of it.
USA is cool for it as you can use all the national parks etc.

  45. Our Van Viv on January 11, 2021 at 2:18 am

Worries me this country as I’m currently recording my conversion on youtube but Europe seems much more van/camper friendly

  46. James Williams on January 11, 2021 at 2:19 am

    England is shite

  47. Member? on January 11, 2021 at 2:20 am

Reason is councils don’t want to encourage people into thinking they can maybe start to live full time in vans. More people living in vans = less Council Tax in the government coffers. They are also clamping down hard on canal boat living. The only compromise the government would likely accept would be council-run park-up sites that charge a council tax rate, like they are doing with boat moorings and pikey sites.
Edit: I’ve just thought of a solution! Buy 12 plots of woodland around the country and legally park up for a month on each. Year round van living 😀

  48. cato on January 11, 2021 at 2:20 am

Because English government is smart. They don’t want the country to turn into the cesspool that is the United States.

  49. jon 4354 on January 11, 2021 at 2:20 am

Really enjoying the channel, some really good advice. I am going fulltime next week, just taken early retirement. I have stopped looking at some of the social media pages about campervanning, so negative and almost scaremongering… Going to stay away from busy areas. Good Luck.

  50. Sam Ebb on January 11, 2021 at 2:22 am

Let me explain "what you don’t get at all". It’s quite simple, I am sure you can follow along.

With localised lockdowns up and down the country, small coastal communities are scared that people from other parts of the country will bring the sickness with them, which may lead to lockdowns, business closures and endless problems. The fact is, the locals don’t wan’t you. This is why they are closing all the car parks and being hostile towards visitors. I am in Cornwall, and it’s exactly what is happening here. We do not want sick people from up-country travelling here with their virus’s.

Go back to your town and wait for the government to end the lockdown madness. Then you should find overnight parking easier. It might be wise to take a small moment, and think about other aside from yourselves. You are in another persons community. They come before you.
