I bought my counicl flat from the council because I had lived in it long enough to qualify for a full discount, which means the market value of the property is £51,000 but I only had to pay £18,000. However there are certain conditions in the contract. Firstly I don’t own it outright (free-hold) I only own a 125 year lease (lease-hold), and also I have to pay an annual "SERVICE CHARGE" which is not a fixed amount, it is supposed to cover the cost of cleaning and maintaining the communal areas and the building my flat is part of. Unfortunately the council in Rotherham UK is extremely corrupt, in fact they are world famous for their corruption and one of the things they love to do to people who exercise their "right to buy" to buy property from them with huge discounts is punish them by selling contracts to sub-contractors to do unnecessary work that lease-holders have to pay for in "SERVICE CHARGES". This is basically extortion. This year they they decided to replace the perfectly good ashfelt on all the balconies, remove the perfectly good balcony railings, strip the paint off, galvanise them & put them back, they removed half the plaster in the downstairs hallway from the walls because a small area of paint had peeled off, so they replastered & repainted the whole hallway, removed the perfectly good floor & put a vynil floor down, they also removed some brick out-houses that were not physically connected to the building put were part of the downstairs properties and were in the communal area where the bins were kept, so they demolished those & replaced them with a small partially fenced-off enclosure to put the bins in. For all that absolutely 100% unnecessary work I have to pay between £5000 and £10,000, they haven’t even told me how much exactly yet, in the previous 2 years I had to pay a total of £1,600 so far, which means that if you take the total amount I’ve had to pay over the first 3 years of "owning" my flat the amount I’ve had to pay in services charges works out at roughly the same amount I would have paid if I had not bought the property & was still paying rent (70/wk = £3,500/yr, x3 = £10,500). As each year passes for the first 5 years I get the 20% of discount added to the value of my property which, under the contract with the council, I am only allowed to sell back to the council if I sell within 5 years, so after 5 years if the council chooses to buy the property back from me they have to pay the full amount £51,000. When they gave me the "estimate" for how much money they were going to extort from me this year I told them I couldn’t afford that amount & asked them to buy back the property from me but they said "hmmmmmn, were not doing any aquisitions at the moment". I am already in £4000 debt, but I am going to have to get another loan & pay interest on it just to pay the SERVICE CHARGE. I’m seriously considering getting a van to live in so I can rent this leasehold council flat out to someone else in order to pay the "SERVICE CHARGE".

Great video 👍Your van build is very inspirational I love to copy your van. Highly curious of your wood fireplace. Does it leave black soot on your roof and solar panels? Does it hurt the paint because ash and water make lye.

I’m from Ontario Canada. Housing and rent costs have gone through the fing roof, if I ever decide to go to a traditional college (thinking of doing online college while on the road). I’m definitely living in my van when I get around to do that project.

Thanks for this videos. First of all I have watched all kinds of videos a about putting together solar energy but I have not for long find a video that makes me motivated that I can still in one day enjoy life of living in the van. I bought a van about a year ago due to the fact that my girl friend at the time throw me out of the apt . Right now am living in a van, as much as I love living in it, I have not heard that experience of yours which is loving to come home and be comfortable. My experience had been living in the cold and heat, simply because I don’t have no experience or idea of what I need to put together for me to run fan, heater, microwave, Dometic refrigerator and how many solar panels, what type of battery that I would need. I want to buy the Titan solar generator and I don’t know how I can get it changed up so that I can have constant power like yours.. I would appreciate your help. Thanks

Mortgage and rent payments deplete your energy more than anything else. Think about not living like the majority. Banks and wealthy owners love fools. Shelter should cost you no more than 5% of your income, max. Seek intelligent outliers for influence and inspiration. Develop a titanium self confidence by increasing your value to the world. Determined souls are learning daily, are self-taught, and never work for less than they are worth. The greatest hobbies cost next to nothing: thinking, writing, reading and speaking. You were born to impress yourself, long before death. What are you waiting for? PS -This van dude channel ROCKS!

Hey Ryan, could you make a video on the inconveniences that you have experienced since you went full-time, and maybe something you don’t like about your van and your plan to change that? Thanks.

I’m honestly starting to get th feeling van life is what I’ve been missing…like it’s the only thing that makes sense as far as housing goes…I’m just scared of not hating it or having problems I’m actually scared I’ll enjoy it and find out I bought a house for no reason…I hate being tied down and always loved the idea of th nomadic life… I’ve actually been wanting to sell my house for a while but was planning to move into an apartment but a van might be a better option…idk though Lol 😂

I really like your van setup Ryan… Good job! So far as "Disaster Ready/But Out Vehicle"… Have you done any research on exactly what’s going on right now with CV-19 and how it may seriously effect vandwellers?

Personally I’m interested in doing this, but it’s going to get to the point where the lockdowns and severe "travel restrictions" that are coming are going to make it nearly impossible to live the van life. Have you considered this possibility, and if so, what would be your course of action?

  22. John Vancamper on March 29, 2021 at 1:22 am

Hi from the UK. Great points mate. Earned confidence………. you took on a van build not knowing if you could achieve the high standard you wanted to, but you did. You set out on this risky (emotionally) alternative way of living not knowing if you could hack it let alone love it. You did. You took a risk putting your videos out not knowing if people would watch or like….but they do. I think we EARN confidence when we DO those things we are not sure we can. Having done them we are entitled to think we can probably do other things which otherwise seem unlikely. Some people seem to manufacture their own brand of confidence with no solid evidence to base that on. That has its uses IF it spurs them to try things they wouldn’t without it. Then they get your (much better) brand of earned confidence. By the way ….I have confidence in you. You earned that also. Happy travels everyone. Johm

I still want to do this, and to be honest the type of build that you have is kind of my ideal build. I just need help with it after I buy my van.

Let’s just get this straight, unless you were cute, your girlfriend’s interest in your lifestyle or anything about you would be equal to zero or even less.

I’m in my 30s and already have a good passive income due to an inheritance when I was younger, however due to re-attending college and the debt it incurred, plus the high costs of living/rent in my city I don’t really live an extravagant life at the moment. Taking some time off my "normal life" to build out a van and travel around the country while also saving money in the long run to pay off debts is super attractive to me though, seriously thinking about giving it a shot after I graduate

  40. FeaRChimera on March 29, 2021 at 1:49 am

This is a good video! However, I’d say the van life isn’t for people with families :/ having a kid in a small van just wouldn’t work.
But at least you could rent out the van or something hahaha

If you happen to be an OTR Truck driver. Van life is absolutely perfect. And because you’re most the time driving over the road. The wear and tear on your van is almost nothing. The best part is you could really stack that cash driving OTR.

Which makes it really funny when I talk to normies and they can’t fathom that you can retire by the age of 30.

im saving this video for all the time I get down or unmotivated. living in a toxic household and couldn’t focus on school or work in the past.. never had anyone to move with
or people to trust anyways… will eventually have to leave and doing research on homelessness its hard to overcome that lifestyle and get a job and all that. considered ending it all…
but vanlife is literally my last shot at a new life… I don’t want to give up just yet.. I’ll try one more thing this made me happy and motivated hopefully it works out
