The Rise And Fall Of Pier 1
Once known for its “treasure hunt” atmosphere, colorful home furnishings, and distinctive holiday decorations, Pier 1 filed for bankruptcy in February 2020. Pier 1 later announced it was winding down its entire business, in part, due to the coronavirus pandemic. And while Pier 1 had a smaller share of the home furnishing industry than some of its rivals, those store closings could mean good news for a few retailers.

The Rise And Fall Of Pier 1
I loved walking around looking at everything, but it was far too expensive and I could never justify buying anything
I haven’t shopped in a Pier One for over 20 years I do all my shopping with them online
I dont think I ever bought furniture from them as they were definitely over priced. But they did have some excellent pillows, wine & cocktail glasses, and other home accessories .
Can the buyer for Pier 1 tell me who made their counter stools? I need to order some…. 🤦♀️ smh
Don’t hate on the dollar store/tree. They are both still in business💰
I’ve never met anyone that actually shops at a Pier One. That’s probably why it ran out of business
Exploiting countries and marking up the price? Garbage. I’m glad they’re out of business.
The belligerent otter culturally deceive because radiator basally bow from a closed backbone. outstanding, ragged half-brother
Pier 1 was big in the 90’s, I loved the aesthetic, this is pretty sad.
Home Goods is the reason they flopped. Pier 1 continued to increase prices, cluttered stores not easy on the eyes…sloppy and started looking cheap especially if you don’t have an eye for interior design or know what’s you’re looking for…old blood needed new minimalist design.
We weren’t a home furnishings store!!!!!
That’s just one area corp went wrong!!!
The cruel drum geographically breathe because anime anatomically clean as a telling condition. aspiring, tacit pink
I used to go Look in Pier 1, and go buy at Home Goods. Pier 1 was way overpriced.
Pier 1 overpriced? Have you been to Container Store?
went there once, they sold useless decorative trash. never went back.
Yeah, They were buying items at rock bottom prices but then ripping people off with a ridiculous overpriced mark up. I went in Pier One a couple of times but never bought anything because it was so expensive. It’s their own fault they went bankrupt. As far as I’m concerned they got what they deserved for being so greedy.
I’m sorry, but their furniture was too expensive for the "cheesiness" of it. It seem like it was made for toddlers to use at a tea party. Their art was way too expensive as well as other of their decorative items. I once went in to Pier 1 because I saw a table online that could seemingly be a replacement for my kitchenette. When I got there the base was over two hundred dollars and the glass top shown with it was about the same price , which wasn’t bad, but it looked like it could fit in a doll house. It was , in my opinion, price gouging at its best!
Yeah because it was too expensive!
In.
I worked there for over 25 yrs. They lost the vision. When the original CEO (I’M SO SORRY I FORGOT UR NAME) passed, all hell broke loose.
Pier 1 was unique n then tried to be like all others.
Should’ve stayed true.
Most of my stuff from 90’s-2000’s Pier One, Pottery Barn, and This End Up just lasted forever and I didn’t need to buy anything else.
Pier 1 was able to sell “garbage” at highish prices relative to the “quality” for years since they were one of the first in this “market space.”
Now that “everyone” is selling that same “garbage” at lower prices, Pier 1 is no longer “unique.”
That this is “good” for the consumer is a double-edged sword. Sure we can all by crap at bottom barrel prices on-line now. But finding well-designed, skillfully and well-made items of quality is virtually impossible these days, and is ultimately more expensive to consumers who now have to replace the crap they bought when it falls apart only to replace it with “new” crap that will just fall apart again.
Steve K.
This says it all. The clothing line was called Gypsy, they changed it to Passports.
Pier 1 failed because most could not afford to buy anything they sold! Way overpriced.
I strongly doubt there is a pandemic, I think that’s just people being overly paranoid.
I did find some small pretty items in Pier One, especially for Christmas decorating ,but I did wish that they would sell some truly unique items from other countries, like Italy or France or Ireland, quality pieces that you would love and pass down to the next generation. Most things now are made in China.
I would have also liked to see beautiful regional items from around the US , and support our workers.
Besides being overpriced every time I walked in a store it had a chemical smell to it. It was something that I did not want to bring in my home 😱🤢.
They were always too expensive for cheap low quality stuff. They were declining for years
I started shopping at pier one in the 80s it was a little hippie store and you found some really good deals in there I’m not sure why they got so expensive…
I’ve been shopping there for years…Pier 1 is going down because new competition did things differently. Pier 1 remained the exact same way!
7:22 How is IKEA not in the top market share? Too few stores?
Pier One has always been mystery as to how they were in business. Place to go for wicker furniture maybe.
it was pricey but they had fun and fresh stuff. i still have a vase and a fish art statue i bought 20 years ago for my 1st apartment
this was my favorite store in the late 80’s and early 90’s. everyone had that round wicker chair in their first apartment and they sold really beautiful scarves and sandals from india.
as I got older I continued to like the summer furniture they sold ( late 90’s-2004) the last time I went in a store was 2018 and everything was different, spendy and had lost the “import” part of their brand.
I did buy a cookie jar.
on sale.
Remember the Pier 1Imports smell. Can’t reproduce that.
their shop in Richmond Vancouver turned into a much nicer supermarket
is that what sell in their? There are a few pier 1’s in Toronto, Canada.. I only ever see older caucasian women enter. I understand why now.
I loved shopping here in the 90s, so unique and different until about 10 to 15 years ago. They went commercial and that I think really was the downfall. So sad, I still have a few beautiful unique finds I will always treasure. Goodbye Pier One
Everyone have no money except top 1% so…!
When I was in my ‘20s (late ‘80s/early ‘90s), it was the place you went to furnish your first apartment. Then they tried to go "upscale" it in the 2000s, it got too expensive. IKEA filled that gap.
The Middle class is being Erased lol😁 Most people don’t even see only the RICH and the poor will EXIST! And then they DEFUNDED THE POLICE AN CRIME WENT THROUGH THE ROOF 😁 Rich people can get bodyguards and hide but the poor will suffer GREATLY! I’m Getting on the Rich side right Now!
Most of their stuff was geared around entertaining. Who does formal entertaining anymore? I’ve never used formal dinnerware or plate chargers etc. It was expensive too.
I am so sad one of my favorite stores
I worked there briefly as a designer in the mid 90’s. It was a fun job but the company headquarter was badly managed by the all male executives. Their refusals to fresh perspectives and changing the business model, were the reasons why they failed. Pier1 Imports was a pioneer of the home decors industry but sadly, the inability to adopt the market and consumers needs lead to their downfall.
WAY too expensive!
Pier one was extremely expensive for simply made products. They had really cute things but the simplest item would be $69.99 and it was for example a candle. I mean it’s no surprise they are gone.
We had them in Washington St.
I miss Pier1… the online store, isn’t the same.
never seen their shop since i live in melbourne
Just the same way I saw testimony of how Austin helped a man make -$50,000 weekly Profit I tried now am also sharing my testimony with over,$10,000 from the company thanks for the good did she has done for me for this short period of time
